Hi everyone today, we're going to learn about the weird origins of the word sandwich sandwich. How did a severe degenerate gambling addiction lead to the word that we say when we're trying to order a ham and cheese, A PB and J a tuna on rye will stick around because you're about to find out. Three. The word, the word, the word. Okay. If you're still watching then you're definitely wondering where did this word sandwich come from? Well, sandwich is a word because of this guy, George Washington. I'm kidding. This is Lord sandwich. The fourth earl of sandwich known to his mother and father as john montague. A member of the noble british family known as the house of Montague. And while this storied British family has produced multiple lineages of dukes, barons and Earls. The 4th Earl of Sandwich left a particularly noteworthy legacy why you ask. Well, you know why because of sandwich anyway, legend has it that lord sandwich enjoyed partaking in a game or two of poker. That's right. The devil's game. And if you've ever watched poker on tv or maybe even played poker yourself, you may know that sometimes those games can last for hours and hours. So the 4th Earl of Sandwich here could not waste time making and eating a meal or risk getting his hands messy and messy in up the cards. So his solution was to have his people bring him a couple of slices of bread with a couple of slices of meat in between the bread. This not only cured his hunger, but it also caught the eye of his fellow gambling brethren and they began to tell their people, hey get me that same thing sandwich boy over there is having and then eventually, hey yo get me a sandwich sandwich. This led to poker table after poker table and I assume castles and cobblestone line cities in Britain and stuff to be filled with feasts of sandwiches. That's what I imagine. There is an alternate theory to how this word sandwich came about. Same guy Lord sandwich. However, some scholars of sandwich say that he would never play a devious game like poker, they say that he ordered that bread and meat combo when he was at his desk hard at work. That's right. They said sandwich was a hard worker. If you ask me though, this sounds like cleanup work way after The fact by some clever pr team probably hired by the sandwich family to make sure that his name did not get sullied in the mud and I'm not buying it. That's right. I'm going with the degenerate gambling story, interesting bonus fun fact. Lord sandwich was good friends with legendary explorer Captain James Cook. In fact, the fourth Earl of sandwich financed many of Captain James Cook's voyages throughout the world. They were such good buddies that one time upon Stumbling across a chain of islands in the South Pacific Ocean. Captain James Cook proclaimed these are the Sandwich Island, which which is what they were known as across Europe and America until they became widely accepted as their actual real name, the islands of Hawaii, that's right for like 65 years. Americans and Europeans called Hawaii the Sandwich Islands. Second interesting bonus, fun fact. Captain James Cook was later killed by the Islanders of Hawaii. I'm not saying it was because of the whole naming their land, the sandwich islands or anything, but there's no evidence that says it definitely wasn't because of that. I'm kidding. They killed him because he was trying to kidnap their king. That's right. Captain James Cook was trying to kidnap the king of Hawaii because some guys stole one of his small boats and he did not expect this reaction. I mean look at this guy, he looks caught off guard. Wait maybe before he goes. He just needs one last Hey, also, I used to have a neighbor who had a turtle named mr sandwich. He used to let him like roam around in his garden and eat his flowers while he wasn't home. And I always used to think to myself how hilarious is it that this guy named his turtle Mr sandwich? I mean a turtle does look like a sandwich, but who would ever think that would be someone's name? Boy, have I come full circle on that one. Anyway, that's how we came to call a sandwich a sandwich.
