what welcome to spotlight on the artist and end up look at some of the stars legends and innovators in popular music. I am Brandon lengths and this time our spotlight shines on bryce Fox and his legacy involved college and electronic music. Growing up in bloomington indiana bryce Fox started his career in music early in life, according to a 2015 interview with reporter john chapman Fox found his voice very early in life. His inspiration started when he was just a young boy participating in his school's choir. So growing up like my voice was always really high class, I was afraid to sing. So I gave him the whole watermelon kind of watermelon because my voice was so high, I was so embarrassed and then puberty hit, that's when I knew I could sing, I started doing it for fun, that's like a joke and people started hearing it and they're like oh you could, you could probably sing a little bit if you wanted to get serious. So, so that's when I started to get serious in school, he was an honor student. His confidence in both schools and sports inspired him to become a member of the athletically built by Delta Theta fraternity at indiana University bloomington over the years he has released songs that his fraternity brothers enjoyed one of his favorite parts about his time in indiana before moving out, moving out of the state was of course the town of Leamington for its field of view and general enjoyment in both music and sports life in bloomington indiana was fun, small town college town so that was always fun indiana University, I was born and raised in Blue Mountain. Um went to school at IU kind of kind of wore that city dry and then decided to come to Los Angeles. And yeah, it was a lot of fun. Blue Mountain was a lot of fun. There were a lot and there was a lot of things to do. We had, we had a lake growing up, so we spent a lot of time on the lake. Yeah, One of the biggest hits since he wrote out of Iu in Los Angeles in 2014 was filled with electronic libraries of all different categories. His most recognizable in his long career stemming back from his time in middle school. You may have heard on several, several website commercials. Now I'm feeling super human. That's the point of the illusions. I'm the man, I'm the man around here. Since leaving indiana, Fox has branched into the heart of music fans for his brass voice in his long lyrical style in both the electronic and indie styles that fits a generation, just like his newest song stronger. His profession has grown on him since middle school, but he is continuing to find a way to push the envelope on his music since he moved to L. A years ago. Every artist from marshall Mathers jay Z started their career slow and paste and Fox used his music career early in life by writing meaningful material As he spoke about his style, changing his life and otherwise as he stated in a 2016 interview with the we found music podcast after college and moved out to Los Angeles probably like five years or so since that happened, you have been trying to figure everything out since then. Still trying, I don't know as far as like for me as an artist, this is like a continual kind of like path of finding yourself as an artist and you know, things change over time with the times and I'm trying to make something that sounds different but can also keep up with like you know, the current sounds that are kind of going on. Even before he moved to Los Angeles. Fox was just like every other college kid in a college town and a college atmosphere like flemington both adjusting to changes both outside and in and his music has re elected that from being a kid again and again. What he did not realize was how much it would mean so much to him both internally and out and other college towns as a movement had started both politically and in college electronic indie music, One change happened when Fox was a baby at the university. He loved, thanks in part to an aging university icon as the music died and new songs ruled the airwaves, just like a college kid, there was some moving in jitters to worry about, especially in bloomington when my time on earth is gone and my activities here are past me upside down and my critics can kiss my And I notified him that he was being removed as basketball coach effective immediately September 10, 2000 a day that will live through the heart of Flemington for years to come. Then I you president Myles brand played down a 30-year gauntlet that no other president had fallen to do before firing a men's basketball coaching legend who had given the school a team value Bob Knight protests erupted through the night as chairs and lights were thrown and torn through the steel concrete as angry students did not want to go to class the next day but instead protesting the firing of their universities beloved basketball coach. A year later night would take the job as head coach blazing yet another red sweater in the heart of texas tech. But the damage he started by his abusive tirades and his constant fights with school staff had seen enough damage done to the IU men's basketball program in 2002 I lost to the Maryland terrapins and then N. C. A. National championship game in Atlanta Georgia. Dixon fires it up to the top of the Georgia dog and the kids have done it Maryland wins their first ever national championship As coach. Mike Davis showed promise by leading a post night basketball team to two tournament appearances in 2001 and 2002 over time. However, you began to struggle seconds left, they get it inside Pat ewing, watch him come in and tip this in. I use gonna win it right, only 0.7 seconds left. They're up by one or by two points. But look at this, are you kidding me? Brendan Plavix beats the buzzer at first, arrest, waves it off at first. They say no good, but look at it. Watch the clock, you can't see it there, but there is 1/10 of a second left as he tries to throw it off. And finally, finally, after they go to the instant replay and Hightower says Good says the three was good from half court and charlotte charlotte wins it 74 73 heartbreaker. Then the year was 2006 when indiana was about to grasp on their basketball program. When yet Kelvin Sampson walked into assembly hall with his head held high presumably because the Hoosiers were supposed to have their hottest recruiting trail yet signing the north central high school basketball star, eric Gordon. In addition to signing Jordan Crawford, who later transferred to Xavier University after Samson was let go from the Hoosiers in 2008 after a recruiting scandal put him and I you underwater Kelvin Sampson is out as basketball coach at Indiana done in by alleged violations. Samson agreed to a $750,000 buyout from the school. He'd been under a cloud of allegations including making improper phone calls to high school players and giving false and misleading information to investigators. Athletic director Rick Greenspan met briefly with Samson friday morning disappointment too. Ah the fans of our university who I think have taken great pride over a long period of time of having ah a very solid reputation for being major infraction free 1st. Let me say that I am deeply disappointed by these allegations and I shared the disappointment with all those who love and support indiana University. I fully understand the desire by many people for us to move quickly to bring the situation to resolution And we intend to do just that. A sticky situation was occurring both outside and Inside. Assembly Hall. Rick Greenspan was fired from being, I use athletic director at the end of 2008. However, the basketball team continued to finish the regular season strong with a 25 and eight record. The team finished their season by losing to Minnesota in the quarterfinals of the Big 10 championship and ice this bad year by being ranked as the number eight seed in the 2000 and eight N. C. A. A. Tournament. They would fall to the Arkansas razorbacks 86 to 72 in the first round of the tournament and then something happened through the fog and rain bloomington strongly flew past through the windy days. A bright patch opened in the sky overhead and a new era although numbing needed to reshape both the town of bloomington and the IU basketball program. After the firing of Samson, I you hired former marquette basketball coach, Tom Crean at his first press conference. He stood as a firm believer, a ted lasso of sorts that I would be back on the map in the big 10. Let me tell you. That was the feeling so reminiscent of the bob Knight years. I listened and I thought and I listened and I thought, and I still come back to what I thought at the very beginning. If anybody asked me why it's indiana, it's indiana. What I feel is the pinnacle, the absolute pinnacle of all the college basketball and that is to be the head basketball coach in Indiana University. Creen realizes the indiana job will be a challenge and simply asked, who's your nation for time. We need to use your nation's help in a, in a good way. And this is what I mean by that. We need everybody to understand that this is gonna take some time. We need everybody to understand that we're here for the long haul. We're here to build, have no timetable, have no promises to make, have no numerical goals to hit right now. There's no question that we're humbled and I cannot wait. I cannot wait to represent these young men to represent this university, to represent the faculty, to represent the student body, to represent the state of indiana head basketball coach here, bryce Fox had graduated from bloomington North and attended indiana University before tom crean ever became coach from his bedroom in his blue mountain home. He started dishing and mixing hip hop music tracks from his computer. He took his talents to hype his fraternity brothers on campus, according to the Blue magazine, he continued his passion for music which carried him through more avenues in his music career, leading to his first big break as an artist quote one day practicing for the 2010 Big man on campus variety show. Fox, a sophomore met junior Daniel Weber, a singer from Northbrook Illinois. The paris first youtube collaboration. The IU anthem was an instant social media hit. Indiana indiana. We're off for you. We will fight for the cream and cram son for the glory on board. To this day. The anthem has amassed over 300,000 views on their YouTube page as this once preppy baseball player at Remington North was becoming a rising star for a rising time in Indiana After I you finished with a terrible eight and 25 record to kick off Tom Crean's career during the 2008, 9 season. The next year, I you garnered a huge victory against number 11 seed Illinois in the regular season with an unrivaled passion and a new swagger to the ball club. I you was finished with an abysmal 10 and 21 record in 2009, 10 and at 12 and 20 record to finish off the new decade. Then came the year 2011 and everything changed as the IU anthem was becoming a hit on social media. Fox behaved like every other college kid making silly videos online to garner attention. His life, his love of music and his love of sports would hit him more on the night of december 10th 2011 when I. U. Was set to face the number one ranked Kentucky Wildcats led by coach john Calipari dominated with NBA talent such as Anthony Davis, Michael, Kidd gilchrist and Terrence jones. The night was filled with back and forth basketball with dunks, rebounds and victor Oladipo having his best statistical season to date the crowd of 17,474 cheered for the Hoosiers and a vibe not felt since the bob knight days of IU basketball. I specifically remember where I was during the game. My grandfather jim was in his second year of battling leukemia as I watched the game with him on the family room floor in my grandparents house in logo T indiana. My grandmother was doing dishes and my and my mom fed my then three year old little sister Brianna her applesauce for dinner. Just like my grandfather's life. The clock was ticking on both his life and the game. I remembered I you calling a time out as Anthony Davis scorched a free throw into the IU basket. Then the crowd was filled with anxiety and we were filled with anxiety, Anthony Davis scored his last basket, we inbounded the ball Zeller screened and then Watford did this. I could just remember my grandfather this day going, oh when I said when do we win? We win. We both jumped up and down like crazy kids on sugar. My high school guidance counselor remember the crowd erupting into quote, the loudest frenzy I had ever heard in my life. Was not only not only beat Kentucky, but the movement was born for you basketball bryce Fox and Daniel weber after the victory. An unknown song played through east kirkwood avenue as students piled the streets near the sample gates and nick's english hut in celebration of the monumental win. The IU union board once asked Fox to make a song about IU basketball after the IU anthem was popular. Un pronounced the students. No one knew the song first but then the beat played and the lyrics rang a core. This I you celebration started a movement not just on that night, not just when I you beat Kentucky but this song would play before any big basketball game on the radio station B- 97. It was played at Assembly Hall after Martha Cleaning Martha. The cleaning lady until 2015. It was the inspiration for students who created a viral music video along with their teacher at brew, Minton Templeton elementary school. This was the last song my grandfather listened to and a song so vocal to the IU community. It has become a cult classic, loved at bars and occasionally loved at assembly hall by IU fans everywhere. Yeah, no, through all the success I you was up. The team had had two of the best seasons that they had had led by Jordan halls, christian Watford will shake victor, Oladipo, Cody Zeller. The team went unbearable. But unfortunately with all this fun I you had, our team was spent losing two sweet 16 games in both 2012 and 2013 between Kentucky and Syracuse. Out of all the people that had left the IU basketball team. One player remained after 2015. Yogi Ferrell, which made sense that the Iu Hoosiers made it to the Sweet 16 game, again, losing to eventual fashion by the 2016 N. C. A championship runner ups in the north Carolina. Tar heels. The next season indiana was ranked as the number three seed in the country after beating the top seeded Kansas Jayhawks. Then I you lost to the University of Fort Wayne and this was when our season was starting to go downhill with an 18 and 16 record going into 2000 and 16 17. I you made it to the N I. T tournament, losing to Georgia tech and ending Tom Crean's era at IU head coach as the team then hired Archie miller to become their new coach after the 2016 17 season Fox graduated from IU in 2014, but not without leaving the school with one more song he came back to the school, garnering the success of the basketball song he made with Weber hyping another coach to the IU football program. This time it was tom Allen The two made their final song which was published in the summer of that year. Yeah, be before the kickoff. According to Blue magazine, Fox moved promptly back to Los Angeles after college and began his notable music career as as he makes music to this day. There is always that one song however, that still remains in Hoosiers minds. According to IU Senior Jack Yearly, he spoke about the song and the time period of the piece as both monumental and inspirational to the future generations of Hoosiers. I didn't think back then, I mean obviously it's a middle school site and I wasn't able to process all of it. So its impact today, but it's become a very unifying song um, to indiana student body. I think it's something they rally around and it's heard a different like student parties and you know, sometimes played in like high senses before a game or something like that and you know, it's, it's catchy, it's fun, the beats, cool. Um, and I think that overall it's had a profound impact even to 10 years to the day and then with the timing of it happening before all the Watts stuff, you know, it really, really did a good job and then this is luck on there. And of course being long lasting because of that shot people oftentimes tie those two things together even though they were independent of one another and have it take on a life of its own. I always wanted to have a Letterman's jacket in high school, but when my grandmother was still in an assisted living in Washington indiana, I do remember the times when I talked to an older lady named Phyllis, her son had attended the University of Notre dame and she had found a impact both on elderly varsity spirit and sportsmanship. The interactions with her made me realize how much college sports can make an impact on both the music genres And sported critiques Bryce. Fox was a pioneer in the early days of electronic music in the 2010th as artists such as Mac Miller and Skrillex were making electronic sounding music for their audiences which were between the ages of 10-25 years old. He also started the car and revved his engines to sporting fans across the state of indiana and beyond. As artists impersonated a style of music and made it their own. Two weeks after the song, this is indiana came out in a spread on social media, the song boiler up became a staple when we visit your town and you know what's going to follow up, pull her up some songs like the University of Kansas and Tennessee is Rocky Top song became the oldest traditions in college sports. Uh yeah, I'm just a late bloomer, I didn't peak in high school, I'm still out here getting killed her. She just moved to L. A. Go to U. C. L. A. And she drive a Maserati. Then she got a body, she be trying to party, she be trying to party, she just moved to L. A. Other songs like penn State University, Sambi nation, Virginia, Tech University's black sabbath song and west Virginia University's Country Road Take Me Home are some of the newest examples of college sports that will bring sports fans like me to chills but also say thanks to bryce Fox as he led other artists by example creating youthful material as college kids. We take life for granted, we are more outspoken than our older peers and we are so enticed so for learning responsibilities and growing up. But at the end of the day, we remember where we were starting in school, we take those days for granted by going to football games on friday nights as a junior and spending your day cramming for the S. A. T. Exam the next day setting the stage for adulthood is very hard and challenging. But we will always remember that one song that we listened to in our youth that brought us back up when I was riding around with my grandmother in her car. She played a song one day on the radio that reminded her of what she called The Good Old Days In 1963. Songs like Foxes like this is indiana stronger and Bad Days. Music will live on in the heart of youth forever because we love beets and new styles. Because we may one day listen to the song that brings us back to the Days of Glory. Songs describe heartbreak simplicity and tranquility. But there's also a varsity spirit in all of us that keeps us remembering the times we did not have to pay bills and do taxes. It was just when life was simple, just like Fox's impact and youthful hit. Thank you for listening. The spotlight on the artist produced as part of the broadcasting program at Vincent University.
