Is there something special you wear that makes you feel powerful. Below you is a silver sheath from the 1100s created to hold a knife. It is a symbol of status and power, exquisitely crafted with intricate raised designs. The sheath is just over 21 cm long, about the length of my forearm. Its slender cylinder is about the circumference of a common broom handle, but there's nothing common about this rare object. It was created during the Goryeo dynasty, a time of finely crafted art and objects, skilled craftspeople made luxurious things like this for the upper classes of society, aristocrats, buddhist monks and the royal family and silver was popular carrying a silver sheet. Like this was quite the status symbol like wearing a very expensive designer watch or handbag. Today. What makes this sheath so rare? Very few examples like this survive today. It's over 900 years old. Time has given it a bit of a tarnished look, but flashes of bright silver still gleam under the gallery lights The elaborate raised designs on its surface also make it a very fine piece. It's decorations are divided into seven sections. The two largest sections each feature a dragon. The dragons. Long slender bodies twist and curve like snakes. They are both contained in oval borders, textured like ropes. The other sections feature of phoenix, a duck and chrysanthemum flowers. Imagine what it would be like to wear this, The weight of the knife and sheath hanging from your belt resting against your hip. As you walked. Both women and men were sheath knives at the time. This was made aristocratic women had more power and freedom than they would later in the millennium and a luxury items such as this would have been passed down from mother to daughter throughout the centuries. Do you have a special item in your family that has passed down from generation to generation? How does it make you feel when you hold it?
