On Labour Day 1935, Homestead was spared the most intense hurricane to ever strike the United States. Still, it devastated the railroads extension to the florida keys and resulted in a tragic loss of many World War One veterans working the construction mine. When the key largo hurricane hit in 1945, nearly all residences were damaged, the Fire Department was completely flooded and Homestead Army Air Corps Base was severely damaged.
