Callie's head shook vigorously. Trevor won't go to jail. Daddy will see to that. Not that he's doing anything shady. She quickly added, it's a plea arrangement. I know your father, Oliver said. I'm sure there's nothing shady. There was something in Oliver's voice that made her want to argue. She lost her opportunity when the thick oak door opened and Judge Latisha Brown walked out, followed by the lawyers from both sides and the smaller, lighter presence of Trevor birdsong. The assistant D. A. And his assistant followed the judge as she headed farther into the bowels of the courthouse. While Buddy Gil and Trevor lingered, kelly got to her feet and examined her father's face. She couldn't tell what was behind his eyes right now, even though she'd spent a lifetime looking into them. Then she turned to gil. His smile was subtle, but it was there. Everything's fine, he said. It was a little hard fought. That woman doesn't like me, but he grumbled. What did I ever do to her? Not everyone has to like you kelly said, Given the world's changing dynamics, fewer and fewer. Judges coming onto the bench would be admirers of Buddy Mcphee and his old texas ways. True words, said Gil. Like I said, it was hard fought for one thing we were dealing with a previous d wi our client had neglected to tell us about a little in chambers surprise. Isn't that something you should have found out. Trevor asked. We did ask you about any previous run ins with the law. But you're right. We should have done our own checking. Gil. Clap. Trevor on the shoulder. We got what we could. Kelly studied Trevor's face and noted a certain power blending in with his golden tan. No jail time, she said. Of course not. But, he said, But we did have to accept a compromise that Damn judge. Not now, Gil said forcefully, his eyes fixed on Oliver Chesney, a man he knew, but not well enough to trust. We can fill Cali in later, don't you think? Meanwhile? We still have a little business for the first time. Callie noticed the uniformed court officer standing in the doorway behind them, waiting. It seemed to escort them somewhere.
