May 8th 1945 known as VE Day or Victory in Europe, World War two in the European theater of operations officially ended by the middle of April, the Army 69th Infantry Division linked up with the Soviets at the Elbe River in Germany and the third Army under General Patton penetrated deep into Germany, reaching as far as Austria and Czechoslovakia. As the allies closed in, Nazi leader Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his Berlin bunker on April 30th Grand Admiral Karl Dune It's became his successor as Germany's head of state. Knowing the war was lost, he ordered General Alfred Jodl to sign the instruments of surrender in Rez, France, on May 7th. Field Marshal Ville him. Katele then signed Germany's unconditional surrender in Berlin on May 8th. Germany's military forces put down their arms on that day, officially ending six years of brutal warfare in Europe.
