Jesus loved nature throughout the gospels, Jesus was often found retreating to rustic and remote areas to get away from the push and shove of life and to commune with his heavenly father. Traditionally this garden is a place he often frequented while in Jerusalem and it is known as the Place of ultimate surrender. Located on the western slopes of the Mount of Olives, looming above the steep Kidron valley and facing the walls of Jerusalem, there was a commercial oil press inside this grove of olive trees in the hebrew language, the garden is named Gosh Money, the oil press. All four gospels relate to this location as the very place Jesus retreated to after he celebrated the passover with his disciples and the last supper it was during that passover meal that he instituted communion and announced a new covenant between God and men, one that is ratified in his own body and blood. Following the festive passover meal, the Lord and his disciples left the city and retreated to this beautiful garden. To pray, Jesus was preparing to face the greatest suffering ever to be visited on anyone and his priority was to pray to His heavily father luke describes the evening saying that he went to the mount of Olives as was his practice and his disciples followed him and when he came to the place he said to them pray that you may not enter into temptation and he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw away and he knelt down and prayed, saying, Father, if it is your will take this cup away from me. Nevertheless not my will, but yours be done. Then an angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him and being in agony. He prayed more earnestly and then his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Only Mark's gospel notes that Jesus used the hebrew word Abba for father in his prayer. Abba in the hebrew language means daddy, and that is the term jesus used that night in this garden. It is the first word most Israeli babies learn to say Abba daddy. And it is the most intimate form of addressing of father. Jesus prayed to his Abba daddy that night saying please help me with his trial, please if possible. Save me from it. But if there is no other way to save the world, no other way to bring the lost Children home, then I will take this cup of suffering. I surrender father, not my will, but your will be done. Production of olive oil requires great pressure as the olives are crushed and then placed under heavy weights to squeeze out the precious oil. How fitting that jesus chose this place, guts manet the olive press garden to prepare for his own crushing and pressing Some of these olive trees are very old and it is possible that the oldest tree of all the large one right in the middle of the garden has been standing here as a sapling 2000 years ago, as a silent witness to the passion to the surrender and the Great Love of Jesus. When the Lord comes knocking on the doors of our hearts, we pray that he will find them like his own saying Abba Father, not my will, but yours. Be done. Thank you for watching.
