The life and times of Martin Luther King Martin Luther King Jr was born on the 15th of january 1929 as Michael Luther King Jr but later had his name changed to martin in Atlanta Georgia to Michael King Sr in Alberta Williams. He was the charismatic leader of the U. S. Civil rights movement. In the 19 fifties and 19 sixties, his leader worship and a Supreme Court ruling against bus segregation brought him fame. Martin directed the peaceful march on Washington D. C. Of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address. I have a dream. He was arrested upwards of 20 times and assaulted at least four times, awarded five honorary degrees named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963 and became not only the symbolic leader of american blacks but also a world figure. Martin formed the southern christian leadership conference to coordinate nonviolent protest and delivered over 2500 speeches addressing racial injustice. But his life was cut short by an assassin in 1968
