Slave trade across the indian ocean From East Africa, Africa is the cradle of human civilization, rich in history, culture and customs of vast continent worth visiting. We will also show you some of the rich historical and cultural sites in kenya that capture our history and ways of life and not forgetting the captivating wildlife from the mid 15th century Africa and Europeans formed a toxic relationship which led to devastation and depopulation of Africa. Europeans gained immense wealth from this relationship. By 19th century Europeans practiced mass slavery of the African captives. Portuguese developed a trading route where they trafficked the slaves to europe. The prime goal of the first european explorers to reach east Africa was to find the source of the Nile River. Over several centuries, countless East Africans were sold as slaves by muslim Arabs to the Middle East and other parts via the Sahara desert and indian ocean. Zanzibar, which was considered as East African slave hub has facilities like the Zanzibar prison island, where slaves were kept awaiting to be transported at once. Beautiful and disturbing bagamoyo, 18th and 19th century coral buildings specific to Swahili constructions served as a backdrop to East Africa's slave trade slaves from the interior of Africa were gathered at bagamoyo port by Arabs and Portuguese traders for shipment to Zanzibar, which in the 17 hundreds began providing slave labor for local plantations, european colonies in Africa and a small number of american plantations. By World War two, Zanzibar accounted for nearly 4/5 of the world's production, bagamoyo resembles other east coast towns, Lamu and Mombasa in kenya, whose narrow streets aligned with grand houses built by slave labor for the wealthy. The caves were used extensively during rains of the sultans of Zanzibar for holding slaves on transit. These caves are also associated with sacred activities that is locals use the area for worship. Recent discovery of slave ships in Sao Jose signifies the importance of East Africa in the indian Ocean slave trade.
