He took out his phone and turned on the flashlight feature then retracing his steps backward. He inched along with his phone close to the ground about halfway to the center point near where he'd almost succumbed to the demon. The red tape on the small cassette, Jane had begged him to find, caught the phone's light. Joe snatched the cassette up and put it in his front pants pocket. Then he took his breviary from his back pocket and sat down in the matted grass where Jane and the deputy had fallen and using the light from his phone, read his evening prayers on his way back to his car. He noticed the restaurant was still open and decided to stop in to get something to eat. It was almost 10 p.m. and the place was full of young people who Joe assumed were all students. The hostess sat him at a small table away from the crowd. The staff had changed since lunch and no one appeared to recognize him. The waiter commented on his black eye saying something like dude, I hope the other guy looks worse. He appeared disappointed when Joe told him he hadn't laid a glove on the other guy, Joe studied the cassette while waiting for his food and wondered what was on this particular one that made it more special than the others. Jane had said she needed it to prove everyone wrong, wrong about what he did not know whatever was recorded on. It was important to her and he'd see she got it back. The lieutenant had told him they were taking her up to Tuscaloosa. First thing in the morning, he wondered how early that would be. He was over two hours away from home. It did not make much sense to drive all the way back to Atlanta. If he was going to return early in the morning, he took out his phone to search for a hotel. He hadn't looked at the incoming call since the lieutenant had returned it to him. There were three missed calls, two from Carlos and one from Caleb. Joe dreaded calling Carlos. His mentor was already rattled by the incident at the homeless encampment. It would not be lost on the doubting priest that in three days, Joe had experienced more temptation and violence than the other members of the sacred heart clergy experienced in their entire lives. His mentor would not come out and blame him for the events, but he knew Carlos would believe Joe's approach to helping Jane was more in keeping with a soldier than a shepherd. Caleb. On the other hand, would be less worried about whether Joe behaved like a priest than if he remained sober of the two. He would rather talk to Caleb right now. But it was too late. The old man would have turned in hours ago. He took a deep breath, prayed for understanding and selected Carlos from the missed call list. Carlos answered on the third ring, Joseph. Thank God. We have all been worried sick about you. I'm fine, father. No need to worry. We received a call from a sheriff's department in Alabama. They spoke to Agnes, they told her you were involved in some kind of incident and you were being questioned. They wouldn't tell her any more than that. What is happening? Are you in some kind of trouble? No, I'm not in any trouble but they arrested Jane arrested her. What did she do? It's what that doctor told you. She left a state hospital without permission. Where are you now, Joseph? Still in Auburn. The police are taking Jane back to the hospital in Tuscaloosa tomorrow morning. I need to see her before they do. So I'll be staying the night here. We won't be seeing you at morning prayers. Then I'm afraid not. I need to make sure she is ok before I leave here. I believe your heart is in the right place. Joseph. I really do, but perhaps it would be best to let the proper authorities take care of Jane. She must be a very troubled person. You have obligations that cannot be neglected. You mustn't let this. This Carlos paused like he was searching for a word obsession with this woman jeopardize what you have worked so hard to achieve. Joe held back the anger he felt by his mentor's use of the word obsession. He knew Carlos meant well and was only trying to guide him. But at the same time, he wondered if this was some reference to his battle with alcohol after taking a few breaths, he decided it wasn't Carlos who was worried about his addiction. It was he, the demon was near, he'd almost succumbed to it last night at his apartment and moments ago in the empty lot, he'd passed those tests, but it had been close. He might not pass the next one. He said a silent prayer for strength. Joseph carlos', soft, Latin voice interrupted his prayer. Yes, I am sorry, father, you're right. Of course, they spoke for several more minutes. Carlos told him he had spoken to Caleb and the old man had expressed concerns about Joe's well-being. Joe promised to call Caleb. Then he told Carlos everything that had happened that day, including his being tased and held by the Lee County sheriff. The story, of course only exacerbated the priest's concerns, but Joe knew any attempt to gloss over the events would be construed by his doubting mentor as deceptive and untruthful, not traits. The archdiocese looked for in a priest
