This is O PB. I'm Lisa Wood. Some news we're following. Federal officials say pond turtles are close to extinction in the northwest. The US Fish and Wildlife Service on Friday proposed protecting the turtles as a threatened species. It's accepting public comments on the proposal. It comes a decade after the center for biological diversity first petitioned for their protection. Western pond turtle populations in the Willamette Valley have plunged 99% and there are fewer than 1000 in Washington loss of the turtle's freshwater habitats and invasive species like bullfrogs are their main threats. Western pond turtles can live more than 50 years in the wild. The Oregon Nurses Association announced yesterday that doctors, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants at Legacy Health are considering unionizing legacy Health is a large care provider in Oregon and has faced financial issues in recent years. The health system has also recently proposed a merger with Oregon Health and Science University but some legacy staff say they want to unionize before that merger to have a greater say in its outcome. Legacy staff will consult with federal officials in the coming weeks on a potential unionization vote. The Hazel Brook middle school in Tualatin closed yesterday following threats of violence, the Tiger Tuli school district announced around 10 a.m. that it would be evacuating students and staff administrators did not disclose the nature of the threat. The closure comes after a video of a fight between students spread virally on social media. Conservative commentators picked up the video and began speculating on the gender identity of the students involved in the fight. District officials condemned the violence and said the case has been turned over to law enforcement for investigation in a statement. They also scolded adults who shared the video of the miners spread false information and that led to further threats.
