This is O PB. I'm Lisa Wood. A group of far right house Republicans are driving the federal government toward a shutdown. More than a dozen have said they will not vote for a stop gap measure that would allow the federal government to keep paying its bills. A stop gap funding vote failed on Friday. The looming shutdown puts Republicans who hold swing district seats in an especially vulnerable position. That includes house member Laurie Chavez Deremer. She holds Oregon's fifth congressional seat and is one of 18 Republicans who represents districts won by President Biden. Chavez Deremer voted to fund the government on Friday. A shutdown would mean the suspension of a wide variety of services until Congress approves funding. Chavez Deremer is up for reelection next year and if a federal shutdown happens this weekend, many essential services won't be affected including the Oregon Health Plan, social security and veterans benefits and some others have enough funding to last through October including head start programs which offer early childhood education. But Oregon head start executive director, Nancy Perri says if the shutdown lasts into November, some impacts could be unavoidable. The shutdown would furlough about 7400 federal workers in Oregon who may or may not get back paychecks after the shutdown ends. You can find more news from around the northwest online at O PB dot org.
