AI is a transformative technology that impacts a growing variety of business activities and processes. However, AI awareness outside of the engineering and scientific world was limited until about eight years ago, when Mark Zuckerberg of Meta began touting chatbots.
Chatbots are rapidly evolving into agentic assistants (AI assistants that use sophisticated reasoning and iterative planning to solve complex, multi-step problems autonomously) that will be indispensable in the business world. If Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce, is to be believed, he is calling for 1 Billion Agentic Bots in the next year.
Many people openly question whether this is a solution seeking a problem. They view the world through their singular lenses.
But the leaders in AI are viewing Generative AI’s business transformation powers holistically.
Large Language Models Moving at Light Speed
The Harvard Business Review suggests that corporations must start from scratch and rebuild their operations around the power of Large Language Models (LLMs) and well-managed data. You cannot successfully retrofit systems that cannot effectively manage or process AI.
If you are still considering AI as a piece of a solution or a single-task application, you may need to broaden your perspective and understand what is happening outside of the public forum and for-profit bloggers.
Real large-scale action is taking place in enterprise settings across the Finance, Tech, Retail, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Defense and Automotive industries.
Serious practitioners are moving at light speed and realizing measurable cost savings, efficiencies and competitive advantage through strategic vision, invention, analytics and actionable insights.
Longer-term advances in task automation will change how humans and agentic AI coexist.
If you doubt this you are falling behind.
VISA has 2,500 engineers and has invested 3 billion dollars in AI.
Walmart has produced over 1,500 AI utilities on a leading data management AI platform. At a recent supply chain industry conference, one-third of the 100 exhibitors were demonstrating AI-driven applications to improve transport, planning and operations.
Data Science is the foundational necessity for quality AI applications.
Generative AI and Business Transformation
The core of Generative AI is the amount, quality, relevance and maintenance of the data.
It is an exciting space to be part of now and in the coming years. Everyone is racing to perfect Artificial General Intelligence. Although this may be years away, as software becomes more humanlike, risks and biases must be proactively identified and mitigated.
The need for ethical usage and results must be paramount and assured to gain and sustain unanimous societal trust and adoption.
Hallucinations, data poisoning and adversarial AI threats are already menacing the informational ecosystems. Criminals are outpacing the CISO’s expertise and fraud detection systems.
This is a state-sponsored threat as are the hordes of clever hackers exploiting new methods to scam, steal from and abuse the unwary and poorly defended.
AI Laws and Regulatory Oversight
The other side of the AI coin is regulatory oversight and actions worldwide. The US, EU, UK, China and the World Economic Forum have published guidance and, in some cases, enacted strict laws to ensure privacy and security.
Each source presents similar-sounding pledges to protect the individual, but you cannot be certain these groups will regulate or enforce their protections equally, judiciously, or objectively. Truthful, protected free expression is not a given anywhere, even when enshrined in law.
AI is no different. It is propelling exciting new discoveries and wonders in education, medicine, and industry. Incredible good is being created through AI applications.
It is also fueling our concerning, brave new world of autonomous AI-driven warfare and the surveillance state, exacting enormous strains on our power infrastructure and environment, and triggering upheaval in automatable task-based employment.
We, as a society, need to be curious, experimental and watchful of the rapidly changing AI technosphere while promoting and investing in innovation-elevating data value and security.
All AI practitioners must constantly and clearly be reminded of their obligation and responsibility to follow ethical and beneficial best practices to ensure a safer and more open global society.
