The dialogue editor collates, edits, and synchronizes recorded dialogue for a film, television show or video game. The dialogue editor is a specialized worker and falls into the broader category of sound editors. Dialogue editors take the audio tracks recorded on-set and clean them up with audio equipment. This entails balancing and equalizing the sounds to make each word as clear and crisp as desired. Tracks may be unusable if the on-set recording was poorly done, to such a degree the dialogue could be obscured by background noises. If this happens, the dialog editor re-records the tracks by bringing the actors to the studio and having them speak their lines while watching their performance.
Responsibilities:
- Build an Edit Master Record (EMR) of dialogue based on circle-take notes and the director’s input.
- Review all recorded lines for clarity and quality issues; inform the recording engineer and production staff of any issues.
- Review EMR and/or pick-ups with the director and other creative supervisors.
- Distribute EMR and any revised EMRs to the relevant production staff members.
- Make and maintain a library of alternate takes, additional lines and walla for future use.
- Pre-spot episodes using the character library and host automated dialogue replacement (ADR) spotting sessions with the director and other creative supervisors.
- Edit dialogue recorded for pickups and/or ADR.
- Cut in ADR, ensure correct sync, and clean dialogue in preparation for mix.
- Review episodes with the director and other creative supervisors once all dialogue is recorded and finalized, then distribute the episode to appropriate staff and post house(s).
- Ensure timelines are routinely met and communicate the progress of work to supervisors and to the appropriate production staff.
Required Skills:
- Previous experience working with third-party editorial teams.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Expert level knowledge on working in both OS X and Windows environments.
- Strong communication and self-motivation are crucial.
- Ability to work well within a team and handle stressful situations gracefully.
- A willingness to learn in-house tools, software, and methods.
- Robust knowledge of AVID Pro-Tools in a post-production working environment.
- Coding or scripting experience is a great bonus.
