Highly revered actor, James Earl Jones, will be honoured with the Icon Award at the inaugural Voice Arts™ Awards Gala this November.

His vocal style is highly sought after however no-one but the man himself can quite pull of his deep baritone and delivery. As one of America’s most distinguished and versatile actors, Jones has an incredible body of voice-over work, in addition to his on-screen roles.

Best known for his voice-over work as Darth Vader in the Star Wars franchise, he also performed the voice of Mufasa in the Lion King movies (yes, there were two) and provided the voice-over of Mufasa in a Lion King audiobook.

His voice is permanently etched in the minds of the public when hearing CNN’s taglines, “This is CNN.” In 1990, Jones performed the voice work for the popular Simpsons Halloween episode “Treehouse of Horror,” in which he narrated the Simpsons’ version of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven.”

In addition to this special award, and among others, The Voice Arts™ Awards will also introduce categories for Outstanding Body of Work Male and Outstanding Body of Work  Female, assuring that great work, done over one’s career, will not be overlooked. Submissions for this category should be up to five minutes of work in at least three genres: commercial, animation, promo, narration, video games etc.

Entrants can upload as many files as they wish, up to five minutes in total length, so there is no need to edit or compile the work into a single file.

The Voice Arts™ Awards is an open competition juried by experts in various fields associated with voice-over, and is presented by The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS™).

It will be the first awards ceremony ever to honour all those who collectively contribute to the voice-over industry including; voice actors, creative directors, copywriters, casting directors, talent agents, directors, producers, audio engineers, account executives, equipment manufacturers, podcasters, bloggers and others who create and sustain the highest levels of achievement within the voiceover industry.

Foundered by Joan Baker (author of Secrets of Voice-over Success) and Rudy Gaskins (Emmy® Award-winning producer and executive producer of That’s Voiceover!™), SOVAS™ is a non-profit corporation committed to the acknowledgment, recognition and advancement of all those involved in the industry. Steve Ulrich (Executive Director of the Sports Emmy® Awards and a five-time Emmy® Winner), plus Stephen McCarthy (CEO/Founder of Brave Dog) round out the leadership team.

Some awards will be presented during the live Voice Arts™ Awards Gala, which is open for ticket sales to the public.

Voice Arts™ Award winners will be announced on Sunday November 9th, 2014 at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City.
