On August 9th2013, the anticipated movie Planes will debut in theatres across the country, starting with a sneak peek at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California.

Planes is an offshoot of the Pixar Animation Studios mega hit Cars. However, Pixar did not produce this film. Instead, the 3d animated comedy is produced by DisneyToon Studios and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures. Originally slated for direct-to-video release in North America, as are all DisneyToon films, execs liked the film so much they decided for theatrical release instead.

The film follows Dusty, a small town plane, who dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. There’s just one problem: he’s not built for racing and he’s afraid of heights! With the help of veteran aviator Skipper Riley, they prepare to take on Ripslinger, the defending champ of the villainous racing circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the test when he reaches heights he never thought possible.

Planes marks the first DisneyToon Studios theatrical release in North America since Pooh’s Heffalump Movie released eight years ago in 2005.
