in the early 20th century, the practice of medicine was a primitive science. It relied mainly on the art and skill of the doctor making a house call. The vaccines and antibiotics we have now did not exist. Many people died from infections that can now be cured. Today, life threatening illnesses could be detected early and treated with sophisticated medical techniques. While that's great progress, pressures on healthcare providers have grown. Often there is less time to get to know the whole patient, professionally trained chaplains air committed to serving body, mind and spirit. They work seamlessly with physicians, nurses, social workers and many others to ensure the spiritually needs and values of patients are met. No matter their faith or beliefs, you might say that professional chaplains provide chicken soup for the soul. Healthcare chaplaincy pays tribute to three people who, in their unique ways, provide chicken soup for the soul
