the rain forests of Borneo are thought to be the most ancient on earth, predating the Amazon by over 70 million years. Unique trees that grow here are seen as an increasingly valuable commodity, and over the past several decades, deforestation has ramped up dramatically. One Borneo resident, the orangutan, whom locals refer to as Man of the Forest, has seen its habitat steadily disappear in the name of economic progress. Slash and burn practices have left thousands of young orangutans without a home, But one woman has dedicated her life to giving these orphans and their species a chance at a new future. Dr. Carmelo Yano Sanchez is a veterinarian from Bilbao in Spain. In 2003 she travelled to Borneo to volunteer at an animal rescue clinic. For the past seven years, she has been the executive director of the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center in West Kalimantan. Her life's work has been dedicated to helping animals in need and preparing them for release back into the wild
