In 2003 Jared Smith traveled to Africa for the first time, being a small town kid. Born and raised in a town of 900. He had no way of preparing for what he would encounter. He and the rest of the mission team took a small airplane deep into the mountains of western Ethiopia, where they conducted a four night crusade. The team watch with excitement as the crowd would swell to over 275,000 by night. For, however, their excitement would quickly wane when they learn that many had to walk for weeks just to reach the crusade field. It was beyond comprehension that so many people lacked access to the Gospel of Jesus. The day the crusade was Teoh, Jared led an outreach where or from Children were fed. Walking into the mud church. He couldn't believe the condition of the building in which the people were left a worship. Even worse was the physical condition of the Children, warning tattered clothing covered, swollen bellies, dirt covered shoeless feet and the sides of malnutrition were evident. One by one, the Children passed by. His food was given out. Soon, smiles begin to replace looks of hunger and the sound of laughter began to fill the building as the Children once again had full stomachs. But just a zit seemed that everyone was fed. One last child entered the room. He was afraid, alone and obviously hungry Jared motion for the child to come closer to receive food. And as the boy walked forward, it was realized the food was gone from the tables in a panic, Jared motion for the Ethiopian volunteers to find something fast. Soon a plate was scraped together and the boy began to eat. This child with nothing more than rags for clothes, eating like he had thought someone would change their mind and take the food away from him, devastated the heart of our founder. For the rest of the trip, Jared couldn't eat or sleep. His thoughts were on the boy and who would feed him. Once the team left the country on the plane ride home, Jared was expressing his anger in a journal. He communicated to God how it didn't seem fair that this little boy may starve to death just because he was born in Africa. Upset, Jared wrote in his journal the words, God, why would you allow this to happen? In a flood of emotions, he shut the journal and began to cry. Why God, why would you let this happen? He began to repeat quietly, over and over, over looking out the window. Jared then had an overwhelming sense that God was asking him the very same question. Why would you let this happen? Jared picked up his pen and wrote in his journal that day. Then send me God. If no one else will go, then send me that. Begin the calling of both Jared and Cotino Smith to bring hope, compassion and education to the poor of Africa. They've traveled countless miles since 2003 to share this message of hope in remote villages and refugee camps, giving away food, supporting education initiatives and even helping the poor. Set up businesses are just a few of the things that our founders have worked tirelessly to accomplish. After years of grassroots ministry on the ground in Rwanda, 2014 began a new error as God led Jared and Patina to put a name on the work they had been doing in Africa for years. Thus, advocates for Africa was born. Since 2014 the growth of the organization has been tremendous. God has been gathering an army of advocates to join the family, to become fellow advocates, toe work alongside our team in the field, to pray and even to support financially so we can reach more people to our advocate family way. Say thank you because you are making a difference to those who are looking for a way to make a difference. We invite you to learn more about the work we're doing. Come see firsthand. The lives were changing and you too can become a part of the advocate family.
