it's widely accepted today. But 40 years ago, the tone post natal depression didn't exist. Now it's routine for new mothers to be assessed for post natal depression. Using a questionnaire which some mothers find intrusive and others unsettling, we write to label women who have trouble coping as post natal e depressed. Or is it time we re examined what a normal experience really is? As many as one in eight new mothers and now diagnosed with the condition? Motherhood is being medicalized, not just the birth, but what happens afterwards to more women than ever being told that their experience of motherhood is normal, that they are depressed. For Chester Post Natal Depression score is based on the assumption that you can measure depression objectively using a questionnaire. But perhaps in practise, it comes down to a much less medical sounding assessment ability to cope. And that, of course, depends on much more than just a woman's state of mind on mental health
