In this age of discovery, we have learned that Earth is just one of billions of planets strewn throughout the galaxy. What are the chances will find another world like Earth with continents, oceans and a life giving atmosphere to find out, scientists are looking for the secrets to Earth success in the events that shaped its history. They're drawn toe a time 4.3 billion years ago. Our planet is still in its infancy. Volcanoes grace its surface. If it has an atmosphere, it's tenuous and toxic Earth is on the verge of annihilation. Another planet, about half the size of earth, has moved into an orbit that crosses our own. The two worlds air on a collision course, moving toward each other at 14,000 kilometers per hour. Imagine the view from Earth. As this smaller planet known today as Thea approaches, neither planet can survive an encounter. This violent impact rocks our planet to the core and envelopes it in a tidal wave of fiery magma. We now know that planets, even peaceful ones like Earth are the product of violence that pervades the life of Galaxies. Our Milky Way is a vast spinning cauldron of dust clouds and glowing gas 100,000 light years across. This simulated view shows a 50 million year span. In that time, thousands upon thousands of giant stars die in powerful explosions called supernovas. Shown here as flashes of light. These explosions seed the galactic environment with elements crucial to planet building, silicon, iron, carbon and more. Some of five billion years ago. Within one remote corner of the galaxy, a shock wave from a supernova has plowed into a cloud. Rich in these elements, the cloud has collapsed into a dense central region, where it forms a vast rotating hurricane of dust, gas and ice crystals.
