This is an documentary which aired on PBS about the oldest HBCU (Historically Black College University) in the south Shaw University. The name of the program was Shaw Rising. Shaw University started in December 1865 with a bible class for newly freed slaves in Raleigh, NC. Fighting vicious prejudice in the aftermath of the Civil War & the Jim Crow south, Shaw rose to become a co-educational college, a medical school, law school & divinity school.

Elijah Shaw, a wealthy textile merchant, contributes $5000 to the growing school, and its first building is named in his honor. By 18 71 Shawl Hall stands on the corn fields where earlier Tough Er's family had hidden from lynch mobs, and the Raleigh Theological Institute is reborn as Shawl Collegiate Institute. Both Sarah and Henry Tupper believe that men and women should be educated together just as they are reared in the family at home. So in 18 73 S T Hall becomes the first building in the nation for the housing and the education of black women on a co educational campus, overtime and Rome. It in the school grew, and in the spring of 18 75 Shaka Legion is officially incorporated as Shaw University, with its motto Pro Christo Humanitas for Christ and Humanity. From the outset, Topper hope to establish a medical school to train Christian physicians to meet the healthcare needs of blacks.
