Chapter five. The Voice. If you want to be a country singer songwriter, you have to be able to sing. The good news is you don't have to be a natural born incredible singer. You just have to be willing to work hard enough at it to be able to control your voice and work it properly. Voice lessons help everyone, even good singers. 53. Even if you think you're the best singer in the world, you should still get voice lessons. Even the most famous singers have voice coaches. Did you know that? Even Reba, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton and more have voice coaches? They often meet with weekly, sometimes before every show. That's right. They're some of the most naturally gifted singers in country music, and they still meet with a voice coach to help them with proper technique. Sure, you could have natural talent, but no one is born with natural technique. It's something you have to learn. So even if you were gifted with a naturally incredible voice, you should still find a good voice coach and start taking lessons. They help everyone. 54 voice lessons help you learn more than just singing, proper breathing, proper stance, proper control and more. The reason voice lessons are so helpful is that they teach technique. Voice technique covers a variety of topics because there are so many different things involved, and the main one is control. You have to rein your voice in so that you could learn to hit the exact right notes at the exact right time. In addition, breathing is the first thing you learn in voice lessons, because if you don't have enough breath, your vocals will get choppy and you can easily get off. Beat your voice Coach will teach you tips on how to breathe in ways that fill your lungs better and faster and tips on how to stand in order for your vocal cords. Toe work At their best, There are plenty of tips that Onley, a voice coach, can teach you one on one to fine tune your own voice so you should do your best to find one and get the help you need, no matter how good you are. 55. Find a voice coach who has experienced teaching country singers, not just singers. In general, singing country music is a totally different skill set. There are obviously a million different genres, and each one requires a slightly different skill set. So it's important that you find a voice coach who has worked with country singers before and not just singing. In general, country music requires some different phrasings, even a different accent, one that you have to slightly incorporate into music, even if you don't necessarily talk in a country accent. So you should find a voice coach. You can cater to your specific genre and make you sound like a country star. If you find the wrong voice coach, your voice might start to sound not as much like you want it. Choose the right songs for your voice. 56. Just because the song sounds good with someone else singing it doesn't mean it will sound good when you sing it. Sorry, not sorry. This isn't a bad thing. Each of us have our own unique voices. I don't sound like Carrie Underwood or Chris Stapleton, and you probably don't either. And that's okay because you sound like you. It sounds cheesy and cliche, but in the music world and country music world, especially, you have to stand out to be successful So don't try to sing in someone else's style. Create your own style and get good at it. Perfect Certain skills vibrato, certain pronunciations Certain phrasings Decide what feels right in what feels like you and do it Don't ever change it No matter how far you go Stay true to what feels like you and stick to it proudly. 57 you sing the song Don't let the song sing you This rule applies in fashion to you wear the dress Don't let the dress where you What does this mean exactly? It means you're in charge It means you have control over the song And the song doesn't have control over you It means when you're singing the song The song doesn't seem to be stressing you out with a million key changes and jumps from note to note and changes in rhythm nonstop If you are singing the song you have confidence in power over the song you are showing that you know the song and each and every one of its ins and outs. You are not, on the other hand, terrified that you are about to miss a note or mess up the rhythm. This may sound strange, but it is a common problem among singers who choose a song that is too lofty for their personal capabilities. It is better to choose a song that you are overly capable of singing and add your own fancy flair to it than to choose a song that is out of your range of capabilities. And to make it obvious that this is the case, choose to sing songs that you are comfortable singing, and then add your own personal touch to them. The key. Here you are in control always.
