I can tell you definitively that the worst thing that you can do is try to battle mental illness, depression or prolonged sadness alone. It is not a Christian virtue to suffer in solitude. If you have ever watched wrestling, the worst place to be is alone in the corner of the ring where you can't tag your partner. I know that sometimes there are things that we have done that cause us to want to retreat into isolation. Shame is a powerful force that will pull you into a dark place away from help. I have found that I am more spiritually, emotionally and mentally healthy. When I open up to people, I am healthier when I have an outlet for my secrets and actions that have caused me to feel shame.
