The project is known as the Emergency Laparotomy Collaborative. It's a two year projects funded by the Health Foundation. The improvements in care in the project come from implementing simple evidence based measures like thes. We carry out a quick sepsis assessment on all patients. We give antibiotics within an hour if needed. Once the decision has been made to operate, we get the patient into theatre quickly. There is careful fluid management during the operation and afterwards, after this type of surgery, we ensure that all patients go to the intensive care unit for extra monitoring on care is delivered by consultant surgeons on DH anaesthetists.
