the last guns stopped firing June 24th 30 27. The flash war was over. They called it the oil war. Earth was a dark and depressed planet for many years, and our country, England, was now in ruins. The bureaucrats wanted a fresh start on, decided to build a new capital and called it lan tro. Like all cities, the rich people huddled together in the expensive apartments with their armed guards and luxury oblivious to what was happening. The south side of the city remained a dark place to live, and as the years passed, it became the home of mercenaries and scum. Amongst this horde of low lives stands building 66. And this is where Drake lives. The last of the government searches. This is his storey, this gummy building. The frickin rats don't even come down here. It's that dirty. The oil ran out. We all knew it would. It's funny The Russians had such high hopes with the Arctic oil. They blew away the ice camps. They didn't give a damn what anybody said on then said sorry when the ecosystem went berserk. But look, we have oil. Ah, whole year's supply. Yeah, nobody would stop them. Everybody was too scared, especially after the last time. This was just this thought everybody, Well, every crackpot dictator decided they could do whatever they wanted to and what they deemed the best for their country. It was a free for all, and that's how we split apart on DH. That's one of the reasons they close the country down. It's not all bad. I got a job out of it. When the country implemented the travel restrictions, they said you could travel within the boundaries set by the state. That is a CZ, long as you are registered and have the standard chip with one that's embedded in your skull. The people got used to being scanned. There was nothing they could do. It's standard. Before they entered a shop or to travel on a bus, they didn't even know what first on the subway was closed over 20 years ago. The last thing they want is people underground hiding. But the state didn't even tell the people why they didn't have to. I'm what's called a searcher. On Thursday, the 14th of January in the year 3060 for the country was brought to a standstill, We were told. Virus's annex B five has been released throughout the water supply across the whole country. Yeah, our enemies are that smart. The state sent mobile inoculation vans, hundreds and thousands and within a week, 18 million people had been cured. Also, they thought this whole operation had been planned for years. Picture this. Your Saturday home, watching the TV on all the channels, playing the same storey. If you brushed your teeth in the last week at a shower or even a cup of water, you're going to die. But we can save you. And this was the best spot. Travel was banned. Nobody enters. Nobody leaves the country's closed down, self contained. All the airports were closed. They called it locked down. And the government said they were doing this for the safety of the world and our safety. If only the public really new. The airport's would never be reopened. And now the city is always empty at night. It wasn't always like this, you know. I was ambitious working for the state. I had a normal job. Then one day it all changed and as always, it was a woman. I saw her. She was with a group protesting outside the light building. I was heading inside, just walking. It was just another protest. Nothing new. Then all of a sudden, somebody threw white powder all over me. I stopped, turned, shouting for the guards. They came running down the steps with batons out. And as the crowd started to disperse, I don't know why, but I grabbed her. I had hold of both of our arms. I don't know what I was thinking. She was so beautiful a face that could launch 1000 ships. And do you know what she did? She kicked me straight between the legs. My God, it hurt. I dropped straight to my knees. Well, now that's what I call a first meeting. I'll never forget it. It was just over a year later, I got on the shuttle bus in the city and there she wass just sat there looking out the window. I never forget a face ever. I went straight over and asked if anybody was sitting in the seat next to her. She doesn't looked at me and shook her head and carried on staring out the window. I sat down and after about 30 seconds, I was thinking what to say. I felt like a schoolboy. The shuttle drives straight through the city centre. It's mainly just high rise state buildings. The whole area is real clean, just for show. Every mile or so, there will be an attraction building something to do and keep the people happy. Well, I was sat there thinking what to say, and as we drove past the Picture Dome, she turns her head to look at it. So I lean a bit closer and say to her, It's a nice dome, a bit like a pyramid. And then I asked her if she'd ever being inside. I don't know how, but we ended up inside and I wasn't gonna let another year pass. Plus, I had to get her back for that kick. As we walked through chatting, I realised I don't even know her name, and I hadn't even told her mind. I said, I'm Drake. She looked at me, wasn't interested. That day was strange. Well, looking back, it was probably one of the most civilised days I've ever had. I have never asked anybody to do anything with me before, let alone look at pictures As we walked around the dome, I could feel myself looking at her. I can't even remember a single picture We had walked around the whole dome on. I could see the exit in sight, so I asked her to spend the evening with me, blank a blank look and she turned and walked away. And that's as close as I've got to being romantic. Anyway, life goes on, and here I am, working for the state. I knew about the four fronts. These were the last of the oil and gas compounds in the world. We took charge of them after the Great Wall of 2080. All our armies surrounded each refinery. They were ours. The leader said that after the fall of the United States, our nation would control the last of the natural resources. I knew it was all for money. Why do you think we became under constant attack by rebel countries? The outsiders. I stayed working in the light building for another couple of years, and it was a Monday morning suited and booted. I was walking through the Dragon Pass. This is the underground walkway connecting all the government buildings in the city. Well, I walk pretty fast and I called up with somebody. It's pretty dark in the dragon. And as I got closer, I boomed out. Speed up, man. You're blocking the path. The guy spun round. He was in attack mode. ****. Knows why this guy was coming for me and fast. He kicked me in the leg. I think it was trying for the knee Cap it bloody hurt. He then caught me with a hook in that rids. Now I was angry and I don't know what came over me. I grabbed him and slammed him against the wall. He was trying to kick me and scratch my eyes out. I pulled him down and head butted him and then my knee straight between his legs. The adrenaline was pumping through my veins As he hit the ground, I grabbed his arm and put my foot on his neck and pulled until I heard a cracking sound. I was drooling at the mouth, breathing heavy, just looking down at his shadow in less than a minute. I've killed somebody. This was my first time. I just stood there thinking about what I'd done all of a sudden the whole tunnel was lit up real bright. It took my eyes. A moment to adjust. I looked down on the guy. He was dead, all right. But he looked a bit strange. His jacket was open and I could see a gun. Why didn't he shoot me? I looked even further and he had a knife strapped to his leg. He didn't work in my ******* office. The dragon is so long. Everything echoes. I could hear footsteps. I looked up and I could see three shadows walking towards me. And one of them was clapping. I didn't even look them properly. I went for the gun and that stopped the show. Now it was serious. The one in the centre started to talk just before I grabbed it. He told me I've just made my first mistake. I slowly looked up. There were two soldiers either side of an old man, tall and thin, carrying a cane. Somebody was going to make the first move and I'd done enough. I stood up slowly, making sure I kept eye contact. All three of them stopped about 10 metres from me. I can remember the cold feeling as adrenaline left my body and the sweat running down my back. He was telling me about how much he enjoyed the show show. I was fighting for my life. It was no ******* show. The body on the floor started twitching like it's still had life. A bit like a chicken. The old man was looking straight at me right into my eyes. He was asking me how it felt. How did it feel to kill a man? He looked down at the dead body and then ask me again. He started to move forward out of the shadows, revealing his old and wrinkly face with a blank expression, just staring, waiting for a response. I took a few steps back and rolled my shoulders, loosening my neck. Tell you what, I'll let you know. When I finished with the two associates, he just laughed, then said, I'm going to be perfect and then called me Drake. He knew my ******* name. And then he turned and walked away. I remember looking over my shoulder and down the tunnel. It was a long at least five miles to the next exit. There was no way I could outrun these guys. One of the soldiers stepped forward and told me to put my hands in the air. He sounded like a robot. I had one eye on them and one on the gun in the jacket. What did I have to lose? Pouncing forward Ruling Pistol inside. Bang! Now I was stuck to the ceiling. One of the soldiers had his weapon pointing at me. It was an anti gravity gun. Damn government weapons! What a sight! I must have bean up there. All my muscles were frozen. All I could do was move my eyes. I thought this was it. I could see the other soldier putting a dart into the chamber of his pistol. And that's all I can remember from the Dragon pass. Over time I try and think of anything I have missed not to change the storey. This is one of those things in life. One of those storeys. You just don't have to change. Well, I found out later the two soldiers carried me out through the tunnels of the dragon and into a government building. It was a large room and there I was strapped to a table in the centre. I remember I started to come round, I could hear voices, but I couldn't open my eyes or move. It was like being on the operating table and awakening while the doctors talked about the operation. Not a good place to be. But if they wanted to kill May, I would have been dead already. There were wires coming from my chest and the white coat started talking, counting down 543 And then the electricity hit me before I blacked out. I remember hearing the old man's voice. I couldn't tell what he was saying. I think I just passed out. I came round to see the wrinkly old man's face, smiling with his yellow teeth. He said The departed agent 14 the man I killed, I killed an agent. I still felt like ****, slipping in and out of consciousness. The old ******* slapped me around the face. His hands were boney. He started telling me how much of a surprise I wass on that the last two years of training Agent 14 were disappointing. He kept talking. I just switched off. I mean, what could they do? It's 50 50. Every now and then I would hear a few words searches 15 removal of chip. It was like a dream. The remorse hadn't kicked in yet. And now I was the ******* guinea pig. I know what you're thinking, but look at it from the government's point of view, people sneak into the country for whatever reason and think they are unnoticed. And Khun, just stay. Believe the state steel, Burda, whatever they want. Idiots times changed over the last 100 years. As soon as they walk into a shop or just down the street, they are scanned. And if they come up blank the satellite record, the location and I'm called in. This is the cheaper option. The state pays for nothing apart from the disposal of the body fires a cheap to keep burning. And I get the whole building to myself. And for every person I find, I keep whatever they have on them. Money, watches, cars, guns, you name it. Have you ever tried pulling a gold tooth out of a corpse with a pen knife? It's a ******* nightmare. So I was strapped to this ******* table listening to the old ******* give the white coats a tongue lashing. He was telling them that the last two years have been a waste of time. It turns out Agent 14 wasn't as good as they all thought. Two grillers in white coats unstrap my arms and legs and then carried me across the room, bundling me into a small office. I remember slumping into the chair and sat there thinking, What the **** of I got myself into? Then some guy started to talk, and as I looked up, he steps forward out of the shadows. This is really old school neo Nazi crap. The guy walked over and pulled the chair out, screeching the legs on the floor. I didn't say anything first. Want to talk? Loses? It was the usual ****. How do you feel? Do you want anything? The guy I killed in the dragon was called Agent Millions. That's how much he costs a train. He then started telling me about the population control on Operation Search of 15. I was sat there thinking, How the **** do I get out of this place? And then he told me to look at my hands. I looked down my fingers smooth, no fingerprints. My head was going to explode. He started going on about the situation I was in and that I had two choices. Cooperation or death. And in 24 hours I was going to be in the city for the start of my training. He then said, In 10 hours, you're going to wake up in your new apartment building 66. He said It was my fault or fate that I killed the agent this morning. This was ******* bad, and it just got worse. The guy took a photo out of his pocket, placed it on the table. It was a picture of a young woman. He turned it over to show me what was written on the back. It said three PM Pay street red hat. I just zoned out on the photo. What the **** was happening. He then placed a small silver capsule on the table. It just looked like a pill with a bit of red on the end, he told me. This is a transmitter. Just press the red end and put it anywhere you want up the nose in the mouth anywhere. It's a GPS dissolvable transmitter for the cleaners. Press the button, and in 20 minutes they will arrive once I've done the job. I sat there trying to take it all in. My head was banging on before I had a chance to catch my breath. Some white coat ****** snuck up behind me with a needle to my neck. I was out like a light. You just woken up. You know the feeling. We don't want to open your eyes all warm and cosy. The first day in my new life I was in my new apartment. I can remember I was panicking and frantically searching around. And then I spotted the photo on the table. I picked it up and then I saw my hands. This was no dream. As I stood in this strange room thinking what has happened to me? Then the lifeline would come in the form of a peeping zone. It was a phone. I opened the closet. There were four suits all the same. And in the pocket was the phone. I answered it. How do you feel, Drake? We don't have much time. You need to go to 85 atoms Street. Knock on the blue door. A man named Catlin will be there to meet you. Listen to him and accept what he gives you. I'll be in touch. Oh, on Drake. Don't forget the photo. I walked out of the room, down the corridor and into the lift. It was obvious the building's empty. It's a very old, ****** lift. You know the sort. But you have to pull the grating across. I stood there. This ******* suit. It was for a small boy. They ******* torture me and take the time to remove the chip out of my head. But don't bother to take my measurements. Atom streets about three klicks away, its rows of older, this used factories that sort of crap walking down there in my tight suit looking for a blue door. I had the phone in my pocket. It was obvious I was being monitored. I could feel it. I was here and banged on the door on about two or three minutes later, it opened slowly on an old man. 80 not dead was stood there looking at me. He didn't speak. He just turned and walked inside and I followed him. It was dark and dirty. Inside all the original factory settings, Long tables, machines on low lighting, together with the smell of stale **** in the air. I was following the old man at a snail's pace. What the **** was I doing? I should just run away and keep running. The old man stopped and lifted his stick up and pointed it towards a door, then shook it a few times. It looked like a broom closet. I walked over and saw a long table with the lamp shining down on on the table, a gun, ammunition and a knife in a sheath. Scattered all over the table were 20 or 30 capsule transmitters, the ones with the red ends. I stuffed a handful of capsules into my pocket, picked up the gun, looked at it for a second, then loaded it and stuff it in the back of my trousers. I remembered the agent in the dragon. He had the knife strapped to his leg, so I did the same. I walked out quickly. I could see the old man was sat in a chair with his back to me. He just raised his stick to acknowledge me, and I walked out into the fresh air and, funnily enough, I felt good, strong, powerful. I think everybody gets that feeling carrying weapons Well, carrying them is one thing. Using them is another. Travel within the city changed in the last 100 years. People just can't walk around freely day or night. The M five chip took care of that. I took the photo out of my pocket. She looks young and ugly. This doesn't feel right. I'm not a killer or a hit man. Why her? Even though I killed a man in the dragon that was different, I remember feeling sick, even scared. I was stood at the door. This was it. And that was then And this is now. That's my phone beeping. Somebody's out there without a chip. I gotta go. So I arrived at Pai Street, looked at my watch. It's to 40 PM time to reflect. The gun was digging into my back on. I kept thinking he's going to fall out. I walked over to a telly booth, leaning against the side casually, people watching I could do with a cigarette. I looked around and then see two young men walking and talking, both smoking. I walk over and asked them if I can have one. Reluctantly, one of them says Yes on When I asked him for a light, he looks even more ****** off. I blow the smoke out, Look around and see Red hat walking towards me. This is it. She walked past me. I can't see her face. The hat is pulled down too low walking behind her. Shall I do it now? In broad daylight. Push her in front of the tram. ****! She walks into a clothes shop I follow And just my luck. It's a lady's undergarments Boutique straight away. An assistant comes over to me and says Can I help you, sir? No, I smile and try to look like I'm buying something for my wife. Red hat now has several hangers and is browsing more clothes. I try not to look at her. She starts making away to the changing room. I look around on the assistance are a ll busy. This is too risky But I walk over to the changing room on walk straight in all the doors are open But one I take a deep breath and look over my shoulder. All clear. Reaching round I take out the gun, placed my other hand on the door Handle Hold my breath and fling the door open. She has her back to me. Stood in front of the mirror. I grab with my hand around her mouth on, pressed the gun into her back. Don't make a sound. I could feel her shaking. I look at her face in the mirror, then down at her body. She's wearing silky underwear on. Looks beautiful. I spin her around and holder around the throat, holding the gun up. I know you, but **** no, it's the woman from the bus.
