The Kaya forests are situated in the coastal plains and heels of Kenya and are regarded as sacred by the coastal media condo community. They occupy the coastal strip approximately 50 kilometres wide and over 300 kilometres long. They are densely forested residual areas of one's extensive lowland. The key areas are the repositories of spiritual beliefs of the media Kanda and are seen as the sacred obor of their ancestors. As a collection of sites spread over a large area, they are associated with traditional beliefs and religious practises and as such have local and national significance. The Kaya forests are important not only for their cultural heritage but also for species conservation. Despite their relatively small size.
