a painter, illustrator and printmaker alloy Fontana, Mature is perhaps best known for floral still lifes. The son of a portraitist Fontana tour studied painting from an early age, cultivating the enviable ability to thrive both in the traditional academic art world and alongside innovators like the Impressionists. During his studies at the Ecole de Bazaar, he copied the old Italian Masters and was invited to show his work of the Salon, the prestigious art exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts. Starting in 18 63 he was just as regularly asked to participate in the rebel, say Laundry Refugees A, which featured works by dozens of non academic artists, turned away from the official salon font on the tour. Sensitivity toe lighting effects aligned him with this group, though he never painted outdoors. Instead, he cut flowers and arrange them and interior settings. This work is straightforward and realistic. It's dark, softly atmospheric background provides contrast to the lush colors and full bodied forms of the zinnias. Font on the tour achieved commercial success through hundreds of floral still lifes like this, which were head among English collectors. Floral subjects were of special interest to Bunny Mellon when she was 11. She received her first book on Flowers from her grandfather, an amateur gardener and horticulturalist. Mrs. Mellon was selected by her friend Jackie Kennedy to design the White House, Rose Garden and later, the East Garden.
