It was back in 1964 that the Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health linked smoking and adverse health outcomes for the first time. This report aimed to change the public perception on smoking by identifying all of the dangers of tobacco use. Today, nearly one in five adults have a smoking habit, and this rate varies all across the United States. Let's dive in and take a look at the rates of smokers from around America. The state with the highest percentage of smokers is West Virginia, where 21.7% of its locals smoke cigarettes, according to CDC data. But where does smoking do the most harm? The most people die from smoking related cancers in California, A total of 14,689 smoking Californians have died due to these health risks. But if you look at the number of people who have died from smoking related cancers as a percentage of the total population of the state, the worst by far is Kentucky. In Kentucky, 0.2% of the population dies every year due to smoking related cancers. That's 10,165 people. More than one out of every five people in Kentucky smoke cigarettes. The most cigarette free state, on the other hand, is Utah, where only 8% of the population smoke cigarettes and 495 people die per year from smoking, which is less than 4950.2% of the population. Smoking cigarettes has led to devastation from cancer around the country. Don't add yourself to these statistics.
