When you write a book report or an essay, you should start by explaining your topic and the purpose of what you're writing. In the same way, the preamble or the introduction to the constitution was included to explain both the goals of government and where it gets its authority from the first of the six goals is to form a more perfect *****. The founders wanted to see a nation where the individual states cooperated with each other and with the federal government, they believed that this would lead to a more prosperous future for everyone. The next goal is to establish justice under British rule. Many colonists felt exploited and didn't trust the government. The constitution was meant to create a fair system of laws that applied to everyone though it took some time before it truly included every citizen. Another goal of the government is to ensure domestic tranquility. Citizens are happier and more productive when a nation ensures peace and order to those who call it home, that home should also feel safe from external threats, which is why the government is also intended to provide for the common defense. A benefit of the states banding together is to have a united force against foreign enemies. The next governmental goal stated in the preamble is to promote the general welfare. People who are struggling to survive likely won't be able to contribute much to society. So the founders thought that the government should help all citizens to have a decent standard of living. When the preamble states that the government should secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, it means that people in power today should think about future generations. When making decisions, posterity was their way of saying our Children and our children's Children and so on. So the founders believed that the government they were making would be capable and effective. What made them think this way? We the people is a very important phrase. These three words say a lot. It means that the government gets its power from the people. Before this, the ruler was a single person, a king or queen who made all the decisions and could never be questioned. But the founders wanted to ensure that ordinary people, people held authority and power in this new government. The phrase also shows that the only reason the government exists is to serve the people beyond the rules and procedures laid out in the constitution. Even the smallest details of the document tell us about the nation our founders envisioned.
