the streets were filled with this year's eligible students and their family members cheering them on how anyone could hope for their child, friend or cousin to be chosen to serve. The mystics was beyond me. We may not have much as commoners, but I'd rather have nothing in my freedom than serve those murderers. Keeping my head down. I pushed my way through the crowd, avoiding the happy, smiling faces of the ignorant. If there weren't so many mystics here, I'd tap into my invisibility. But it was too risky. My mother hadn't sacrificed everything just to reveal myself because I didn't want to socialize. A round of applause and cheers caught my attention and I cursed under my breath, ducking and slithering through the crowd. I weaved around a large man, only to run smack into someone else. Someone's in a rush. He grabbed my shoulders to steady me. Yeah, well, I wouldn't want to be hung for tardiness. I shuffled away from him and looked over his shoulder for a path forward. I hardly think they'd hang you. The smile in his voice captured my curiosity, and I stopped to look at him, humored cobalt eyes stared into mine and my rebuttal melted my tongue easy on the eyes. His clothes were clean and pressed. A luxury foreign to commoners. Even the most dressed up commoner didn't look as polished as he did, which meant he was a mystic and had no idea what it was like to fear hanging as much as I would love to educate him. I didn't have the time or patience. I'd rather not find out. I huffed and pushed past him disrespectfully as I moved to the front of the crowd, a wall of security halted me. The mystics always employed lapis guards to take attendance. They'd send goons to find you and drag you to witness the choosing if you dared to play hooky, willow night! I said to a lapis guard with a clipboard. He scanned the list and nodded, cutting it close, Aren't you? He motioned for me to join my fellow chosen candidates.
