Until the 70s new moms and dads were handed a small piece of paper with instructions on how to tend to a newborn's needs. Just a piece of paper. I remember seeing one at my mother's house and the suggestions were the most absurd bunch of rubbish I have ever read. Imagine the pamphlet telling you to keep your baby away from your friends and relatives who will be interested in holding and hugging the baby today. The reality is so different. You go to a friend's house and they're all about holding the baby, swaddling it and taking selfies with it. According to the hospital administration suggestions, the baby was to be kept to himself. Oh yes. They didn't have girls back in the 70s in a room with no visitors other than the parents. Another proposition that caught my attention was to check for pins sticking into the baby. If it kept crying after three hours insane. Right? Why would you let the baby cry for three hours before checking in on him again? No girls remember to see if any pins were poking. Why not just check on the baby after five minutes. Imagine the mothers of today doing it, leaving the baby to cry for that long. Imagine doing that in a public place. I dare you. You will drown in judgmental stares from other mothers within seconds. All you would want to do then was to find a place to hide. But here you are stuck trying to figure out this mess and it's certainly difficult. Kids can be super challenging and unfortunately no amount of training and research can prepare you for parenting when the child arrives, parenting standards have never been so high. It feels like everyone is watching you, waiting for you to fail and picking on you as a parent, everyone has an opinion about how to raise your kid, But few of them have an accurate idea of your unique situation. You fear that this is all you can look forward to for the next 10 or 20 years, and maybe it will even get worse as they hit their teens.
