David Ludwig Block has never explained the significance of the eye at the top of the painting. However, his numerous works about the holocaust frequently contain religious imagery, which he uses as an indictment of the way in which the 10 Commandments were completely disregarded and even mocked during the Nazi era. It is therefore reasonable to interpret this image as a closed, all seeing eye, a symbol of an inhumane godless place.
