as the wave consumes him, wiping him away from my sight entirely. I realized that maybe he wasn't closing his eyes to focus. Maybe he was letting go, Forced to be in the moment, awake to every ounce of himself. The last thing I saw was his hand fully extended, fingers outstretched, as if for one last second he could be saved by someone, anyone, anything. And then he was gone. The hellish wave continues on its path of destruction, and I lock onto looks arm. I'm breathing deeply, trying to force any oxygen into my body to aid my burning muscles. As we dredge further up the hill, a cold mist touches the exposed skin on my back, alerting me that the water is getting closer and just below the surface I can see more of the broken volcanic glass. The burning in my legs begins to dissipate into numbness, the numbness over taken by pain until my muscles are functioning on pure adrenaline, propelling my body forward. I can't do this, I shout to Luke as he looks back at me. I noticed the necklace swing across his face. Something is different. The upper circle is illuminated and appears to be moving in on itself the way wax moves in oil, contorting and molding in an endless lump. The colors are brilliant. Bright, fiery oranges, yellows and blues, each one assented and shimmering, folding in and out, exploding and imploding at the same time. Yes you can, he shouts. Look, I look up ahead and I see the monument. It had a base like an Egyptian pyramid. The sides are smooth and a staircase is directly centered leading up to one of the two rooms. Behind this pyramid shaped temple lays the castle square I had noticed from the yacht. However, I can see no obvious route to gain access to that particular point. At the top of the temple, I noticed small windows displaying a faint light from within. Something to focus on. The pyramid itself must be bleached white. It is practically glowing in the dark against the moonlight, the top most point sparkling like the terrifying pillars of jagged glass, teasing our heels, preparing to consume us just as it did. Santos, we need to go faster. I showed it, Luke, finding any last bit of strength left in my legs. All of my fears the ocean deep with its mysterious terrors, have manifested into this moment. Thankfully, the thick mangroves clear and the path ahead opens up to reveal the entrance to the staircase. Courage resurfaced inside me, knowing that maybe there is a chance we could make it to safety, a chance we could live. I broach the first airs, their enormous and much larger than I anticipated. I scream out in pain as my knees flexed and contracted a new set of muscles, activating in an attempt to hastily propel me higher. Luke is practically dragging me, skipping two steps at first, then three, then four, Looking up at the temple, I am momentarily distracted by something moving, shadowing the faint light. Someone is already inside. Lou keeps pulling, and I want to tell him to let go, to not risk his life for mine. It's not worth it, but something holds me back. Maybe it is the fight or flight response so many anxiety sufferers air familiar with. Or perhaps it is the deep desire to touch him again. In either case, it means I want to live, truly live for the first time ever, and I recognize that without any question. I'm distracted once again, this time by something directly ahead of us stripes moving against the stairs. It was the cane carried by Dr Kerr. Why was he there? And how in the world did he get ahead of us with his leg busted like that? Then I see Dr Everett assisting him. We're practically on their heels now, Flying of the stairs. My legs were heavy, my knees burning from the strain of leaping And my upper back, despite being in the crosshairs of the misty breeze, begins to cramp. I chanced a look back and see the water closing in, tearing away bits of shrubbery, ripping plans it by their roots Look. And I made it to the doctors. With his free arm, he grabs Dr Kerr around the waist and proceeds to charge of the stairs, grunting in agony as he tries to save all of us from this nightmare. The water is all around us now, having already consumed the outer part of the monument, it is only a matter of time. We have one chance. And even if we do make it to the top, there is no guarantee the water won't get in
