A wave is a disturbance caused by energy as it moves with sound. Air is moved, creating high and low pressure points, or waves. These waves, or oscillations, travel along the same direction as the sound is moving. Light is radiation that travels from a source to. But since light is electromagnetic radiation, it doesn't require a medium like air to travel through. Additionally, light waves oscillate perpendicular to the direction that the light is moving. This is why light can be polarized by passing light through a filter with many fine slits, all going the same way the light waves are restricted to a single plane.
