In addition to developing national parks, the Corps of Engineers designed, built or helped complete many national monuments. The court was responsible for helping choose the location and preparing the Tidal Basin on which the Lincoln Memorial stands. Site for the Jefferson Memorial was prepared for construction by the Corps of Engineers. Left partially built by its bankrupt sponsors, the Washington Monument was completed by the Corps of Engineers in 18 84. Since 18 24 the Corps has provided the leadership for countless projects to make the country's waterways safe for travel and commerce.
