Adriana was finally starting to feel settled again. She hadn't realized how a drift she'd been until she packed up and moved with her daughter back to England. Her marriage to Gerard had ended as spontaneously as it had started. Things between them had been patchy for a long time, ever since Crystal was born, and he was left to be her main career while Adriana worked on zero. But her daughter was her world, and the day Gerard left was the day Adriana realized she might lose it. But here she was, with full custody of her little girl and a new home, a new life back in England. They had been here close to six months now, and while the wounds from her latest divorce were still fresh, she felt, for the most part happy, Which was why she had found herself actually saying yes. When Vivian asked her and not for the first time to take a night off from motherhood and go out, she knocked on Vivian store, crystal small hand, held tightly in her own and felt her stomach twist. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. She hadn't had a night out to herself in years, she was bound to make a fool of herself. But it was too late to back out now. And to prove her point, the door swung open, revealing Lincoln Vivian's husband, looking good. Adriana, he smiled. Vivian's just about ready. Has Crystal eaten? He stepped aside, and Adriana walked in with her daughter. Yes, she has. And I gave her a bath to really. All she needs is a bedtime story. Crystal, dressed in pink pajamas, a pair of slippers and her dressing gown, smiled up at her uncle and pulled her hand free from her mother's as she rushed forward with their arms up until Lincoln bent down and scooped her into his arms. Lovely, he said, We're going to have a lot of fun tonight. Aren't me Crystal? Yes, Crystal beamed. Vivian walked into the room with the grin plastered across her face. She hugged her sister and pressed a kiss to her nieces cheek. I've just got to grab one thing, Adriana, and then we can go. Adriana nodded at her and turned to Crystal, opening her arms. Come here, love, Give me a cuddle and a kiss. Crystal happily moved from Lincoln's arms into Adriana's be good for Uncle Lincoln. Okay, sweetheart, Adriana was saying, You do as he says and go to sleep on time. OK? Mommy? Crystal promised. Adriana smiled. Good girl. She gave her daughter a kiss and put her down before straightening up and taking a backpack from her shoulders, passing it to Lincoln. She has some clothes for the morning. Ah, book and a teddy in here, she told him. Great, Lincoln smiled. I'll bring her around in the morning after breakfast. Have a good night. Do you want to go and find your cousin's crystal? He asked the girl, who nodded enthusiastically. OK, say good bye to Mommy. Crystal hugged her mother's likes quickly and ran off into the house in search of her cousins, leaving Adriana barely enough time to say her last goodnight. Lincoln laughed, watching the girl disappear before he followed after her
