These young scholars whose outstanding academic achievements earned them the right to attend one of America's most prestigious universities came from families, both rich and poor, educated and uneducated from inner cities in the north and small towns in the deep south and with educational backgrounds ranging from public high schools to elite private academies. But they were all still young black students facing the challenges and pressures of achieving success at the summit of higher education in a racially charged America And by supporting each other through both their personal and academic challenges. While at Harvard, these young scholars forged very special bonds as classmates that continued to evolve more than 40 years later.
