The Boy With Ginger Hair by Mary Campbell. John was a nice, quiet little boy who lived with his mom and dad in a nice, quiet part of the town. But there was something about John that wasn't so quiet. The colour of his hat. It was a bright, loud colour that made people stare. Look at the colour of that boy's head. They would say, What a lovely colour it is. It isn't yellow, and it isn't red. It's a mixture of red and yellow. It's orange everywhere John went. His hair would glow like the setting sun of the flames of the fire. His mother thought his hair was lovely and brushed it until it shone even more brightly. But John didn't like it, especially when all the other Children teased him and called him ginger or copper knob or sometimes orange bonds. John wished his hair was brown, brown and ordinary so that nobody would notice it, but he didn't know how he could change it. One day when he was looking in the cupboard for his best shoes, he saw something that looked like a brown Harry dog. But he could not be a dog because they hadn't got one. When he pulled it out of the cupboard, he saw that it was a week. It was dark brown and curly, and it covered up John's orange coloured hat. John took the week to his bedroom and put it on. Then he looked in the mirror. He looked so different that he scarcely knew it was himself. When John went to the play park next to his house, the first person he met was the milkman who was a friend of his and sometimes gave him a ride on his cart. But the Millman didn't even say hello. He didn't know it was John. Then he met the policeman who was really unfriendly. He said, You're a strange looking boy, not up to mischief. I you run away home now, but you know me, said John. I'm the boy who lives in number six. No, no, you're not, said the policeman. That's young John, who lives in number six, the boy with the bright orange hair. Your hair is just the colour and old brown boot, and it's too curly. Oh, dear thought John, what have I done? No one will speak to me. Nobody knows me. So he went home quickly. When he got home, his mom said, What have you got on your head? You do look funny. Wearing that sold wake, she started to laugh, and she took it off and comb John's orange coloured hair. Then John went out into the garden to play the marmalade coloured cat from next door came over the wall. Hello, Ginger, said John to the cat. You've got nice coloured hair. Hello, Ginger heard the cat back to John. So have you. And they both felt rather pleased with themselves.
