walking with the horse's head of right against his back and started out. Three shots rang out, kicking up rocks and dirt in front in both sides of the horse. Gene. I don't see nobody leading that horse. I think he's just walking off. Maybe that shadow Berle's killed that stupid little cowboy. They didn't know it was a kid. Only 4.5 feet tall in front of that horse. Marshall got the horse well into the trees, then waited and waited. He was starting to realize Tom might be too weak to make it this far. He tied the horse, then walked west until he saw Vivian, Zach, Harrison and Sami's standing south of the road. Isabelle stood watching what Marshall was doing. He walked a Vivian baby in. I want you to go ahead and black down the stage. It will be along any time you get you all back to the farm. Now you talk Grandpa and Grandma, I'm all right and not to worry, but I gotta take Tom home. He'd never make it by yourself. I don't know how far away that ranches Tom talked about, so I might not be home before tomorrow. Vivian looked him in the eyes. You just tell him I'm seeing a wounded cowboy home. Zach was with me and knows what I have to Dio. Isabel looked at him. The kids walked on over close to the stage road, but stayed out of sight. Marshall got back to the horse, but Tom hadn't made it yet. He stood looking across the open ground between here and the ruins. He looked west, then walked through trees to about where he and Zach walked to the ruins. No one could see him until he got to the wall. This is the way he must bring Tom slowly. He walked. He's doing his best not to step out in the open. He finally made the hole in the wall and step through, walking along the inside wall. He got to where Tom was just outside and to his left talking. Hear me? Yeah. I'm weaker than I thought. I was beginning to think one of them slugs got you. Now. They missed me by two feet. You think I can help you through the whole, then along the wall to the next hole? Make it that far and they can't see us. We can stay in trees all the way to where I have your horse tied. It took almost 1/2 hour them getting to the horse, taking no chance of being seen. Just a martial pushed and lifted Tom into the saddle. They heard the stage driver Haller bringing the horses to a stop. Marshall climbed up behind the saddle saying the kids would be home in a few minutes. Can you hold the reins and right? All right. I think so. But we sure have a ways to go. If I wasn't shot, it takes less than a couple hours. If you see, I'm gonna fall off, try to catch me. They slowly walk the horse and rode up a slight slope between and around tall trees, then out onto the stage road and headed. He's after a couple miles. The road turn south by southeast. Tom stopped the horse and got the canteen. Can ding it back to Marshall after they both had a good drink. They slowly started on. Okay, You know my name. What? Your martial. Pasqua. You live close to where you found me? No. I live on the outskirts north of Hama. but him staying up river a couple miles with grandpa while my folks are in Denver, that little kids act, What was with me? That's a cousin Tom moved in the saddle and said, Having to walk this horse, I'm thinking we ain't gonna make the lynch for dark After this road turned street south, we turn off on the ranch road in a couple more miles after that. Would it matter to you if we stop for the night up yonder at the mouth of Brussels Kenyan? There's a good creek where we'll have water. That's all right. If you have matches for a fire, I dio and food and coffee. I don't drink coffee, but I sure do. You lead. The stage stopped out on the road where Vivian said they were going and was less than 1/16 of a mile from the Pasco farm. Five young kids ran down that road, wanting to tell Joel and Tiny what all happened. Tiny was close panic about Marshall, but Joel quieted her down. Tiny, Stop it. You're going to scare the kids. Sammy looked over at him. Jewell looked at Sami and smiled. That's a smart girl, Sammy It's a good thing what Marshall is doing. Joel put an arm around Harrison shoulder walking into the house. Come on, little buddy. Let's eat supper. Say a perfect home. Harrison looked up at him. Yeah. And for mom and Dad. Grandpa, I sure do miss him. Yeah, me too.
