Ratty said the mole suddenly one bright summer morning. If you please, I want to ask you a favor. The rat was sitting on the river bank singing a little song. He had just composed it himself. So he is very taken up with it and would not pay proper attention to mole or anything else. Since early morning. He'd been swimming in the river in company with his friends, the ducks and when the ducks stood on their head suddenly as ducks will, he would dive down and tickle their necks just under where their chins would be if ducks had gins till they were forced to come to the surface again in a hurry, spluttering and angry and shaking their feathers at him for it is impossible to say quite all you feel when your head is underwater at last, they implored him to go away and attend to his own affairs and leave them to mind theirs. That's a likely little broach you got on. Miss said perks the porter. I don't know if I ever saw a thing more like a buttercup without it was a buttercup. Yes. Said Bobby glad and flushed by this approval. I always thought it was more like a buttercup almost than even a real one. And I never thought it would come to be mine my very own. Then my mother gave it to me for my birthday. Oh, have you had a birthday? Said perks? And he seemed quite surprised as though her birthday were a thing. Only granted to a favored few. Yes. Said Bobby. When's your birthday? Mr Perks. The Children were taking tea with Mr Perks in the porters room among the lamps and the railway almanacs, they had brought their own cups and some jam turnovers. Mr Perks made tea in a beer can as usual and everyone felt happy and confidential. My birthday said perks dipping some more dark brown tea out of the can into Peter's cup. I give up keeping of my birthday before you was born. When Pinocchio entered the puppet show, he nearly caused a revolution. You must know that the curtain was up and they had just started the play Harley Quinn and Polo were on the stage. Quarreling as usual, threatening every moment to come to blows. The audience paid the closest attention and were laughing till they were sore to see these two puppets quarreling and gesticulating and calling each other names just as if they were truly two reasoning beings, two real persons. But all at once, Holly Quinn stopped and turning to the public pointed to the pit of the theater and shouted dramatically. Heaven's above. Am I awake or am I dreaming? That must be Pinocchio there? Yes, it's indeed Pinocchio. Cried Punchinello. Once upon a time, many years ago when our grandfathers were little Children, there was a doctor and his name was Dolittle. John. Dolittle MD MD means that he was a proper doctor and he knew a whole lot. He lived in a little town called Puddle on the Marsh. All the folks young and old knew him well by side. And whenever he walked down the street in his high hat, everyone would say there goes the doctor, he's a clever man and the dogs and the Children would all run up and follow behind him. And even the crows that lived in the church tower would cow and nod their heads. The house he lived in on the edge of the town was quite small, but his garden was very large and had a wide lawn and stone seats and weeping willows hanging over his sister, Sarah Dolittle was housekeeper for him. But the doctor looked after the garden himself. He was very fond of animals and kept many kinds of pets besides the goldfish in the pond. At the bottom of his garden, he had rabbits in the pantry, white mice in his piano, a squirrel in the linen closet and a hedgehog in the cellar. He had a cow with a calf too and an old lame horse. 25 years of age and chickens and pigeons. And two lambs and many other animals. But his favorite pets were dab, dab, the duck chip, the dog, gob gob, the baby pig, Polynesia, the parrot and the owl tutu.
