Although she would never admit it, Rebecca was glad to have Mike with her. On the drive to the base, she was beginning to feel a little unsettled by the events of the day, the power cut not being able to get signals on the phones, the missing workers at the construction site and now the almost complete absence of traffic. They had seen a total of three cars during the half hour drive to the base. Two of those had overtaken her at speed. The other had been driving erratically in the opposite direction. She didn't know this road very well, but would have expected much more in the way of traffic. Mike was checking his phone as they travelled, but didn't seem to be able to find a signal. She noticed a couple of times that he did seem to mumble to himself. She was about to say something on the second occasion, but he had stopped when she turned round to look at him. Turning left at a junction, she found herself in a more familiar road not far from the base again. There was no traffic. She had half expected to pass Miller in the truck on the way over to the science, but there was no sign of him. She was mentally reviewing what she would need to take back to the side. The next step, after a couple more surface scans, would be to attempt drilling into the structure. Did the surface circuitry extend into the interior? She turned into a small access road, running down to the base. From the main road ahead, she could see the security hut by the entrance barriers. She slowed, ready for the normal security cheques as a guard stepped out of the hut with a rifle raised directly at them. Bloody ****, said Mike. Is Rebecca slammed on the brakes? Is that normal? No, definitely not. The guard walked slowly towards them, circling around towards Dr cars. Well side of the car. She noticed the second man also advancing towards them from the other side of the barrier AA gun also raised in their direction. He was dressed in army fatigues, no guard uniform, which Rebecca thought odd. What do we do? Mike sounded nervous. She looked across at him. His gaze was jumping from one man to the other. Just stay calm. The power out. Take is probably triggered a heightened state of security, just routine, said Dr Carswell. Although she didn't really believe that herself. Why would they have weapons drawn my aim at them? She started to open her car door.
