In the 18 sixties, conservationist John Muir wrote eloquently about the beauty of Yosemite Valley, with its steep cliffs and towering sequoia trees. Eventually, those 1st 10 accounts made their way to President Lincoln, who signed the Yosemite Land Grant in June of 18 64. It was the first time a government had protected land for its natural beauty.
