the Iditarod is one of the most challenging and extreme races in modern sports. This dog sledding event runs from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska, and has run every March. The event began in 1973 and runs over 1100 miles across frigid terrain. Each racer and his team of 12 to 16 dogs must face incredible challenges such as blizzards, gale force winds and temperatures that can drop to minus 100 F. With wind chill, the participants are called mushers, and each year around 50 of them compete for the prize. Samantha had been lying in the big pile of leaves all afternoon.
