About Paul van Geldrop
Everything is a story; get YOURS told the right way!
Whether it’s a telephone greeting, a Youtube video on insurance possibilities, or a promotional ad about an exciting new medical product, everything is a story, and every story needs the right storyteller!
Stories can take many different forms, and we tell them for different reasons. Through stories, we can educate, inspire, comfort, challenge, amuse, convince, or even tease our listeners. The way we tell our stories, the tone and emotions we put into them, the subtle accents we place in certain spots, and even the subtle application of a pause; all these determine how the audience hears your story and the message you wish to bring across.
Every story needs the right storyteller, and I will be yours.
Before I get to tell your story, it’s only fair I tell you mine. The main ingredient in my story is, without a doubt: curiosity. I have always been fascinated with learning, exploring new things, and hearing new stories. I’d spend hours in our local library scrounging for books I hadn’t read yet, searching my parents’ bookcases and attic for new wonders to discover and try out, or listening to the radio for new songs. Every weekend, my dad would read to me and my brother from the books of Grimm or Andersen, or just tell us stories he made up on the spot. His favourite one to tell was ‘What Father Does Is Always Right’ by Andersen, no points for guessing why... storytelling definitely runs in the family!
As I got older, TV and movies brought me new things to see and learn. From Monty Python to Indiana Jones, I devoured new stories constantly. Music was another constant for me; you’d never see me walking around town without my headphones on! I also loved writing my own stories.
At school, languages and history were my favourites. I loved reading about ancient civilisations and cultures and graduated high school with no less than six languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Latin, and Greek. I also briefly studied Latin and Greek at university, before switching to English literature.
As I always had a knack with computers, I started working in IT somewhere in ’98. In the 20 years that followed, I did anything from IT support and service management to database programming and IT infrastructure design. Again, curiosity led me to all sorts of places! I got certifications in all major areas and worked in 50+ different companies ranging from a 2-person graphic design bureau to multinationals with 25.000 employees worldwide. The last 8 years of that career I worked as a project manager and general manager in a large mental healthcare organisation. Here too, my curiosity showed me the way. I was constantly learning new skills, from personal coaching to financial management and business strategy development, finetuning these during my Bachelor and Master studies in management sciences. Besides these, I always had at least one extra course I would be working on, be it social psychology, neuropsychology, or even forestry; there is always something new to learn!
After 20 years, I decided it was time for a change. After a short break, I started my full-time career as a voice actor and composer. I had already spent most of my life playing and writing music, and these days I compose instrumental pieces ranging from solo instruments to full orchestral works. I’ve had the pleasure and honour of writing music for film, theatre, and audiobooks. As a voice actor, I’ve gotten to tell stories for audio tours in Spanish museums, characters in video games, language courses in both Dutch and English, and so many more.
So, that’s my story in a nutshell. I’d love to hear yours!
My work ethic
I have three simple yet powerful principles I always follow:
Don’t compromise on quality
I always aim to deliver the best possible quality. I take the time to prepare scripts, find the right intonation and emotions for the story, ensure that the audio quality is pristine, and my voice is in its best condition. I don’t settle for mediocre takes, careless pronunciation, or background noises, no matter how slight. To ensure the best possible quality, I work with high-end audio equipment, a custom vocal booth, and professional mixing and mastering software such as Izotope’s RX8 Advanced, Ozone 9 and other plugins, and listen to everything on my studio monitors and my Neumann NDH 20 headphones before sending something over. I also constantly work on improving my skills through coaching, courses, and lots and lots of practice. I passionately believe in the importance of quality and will always go the extra mile to get it. I believe every story deserves nothing less than the absolute best.
Communication is key to understanding
A lesson I’ve learned through my work as a project manager and manager is that communication can make or break a relationship. I want there to be no barrier for someone to approach me and want my clients to be able to give any form of feedback they have. I want to hear any objections or concerns you might have so that I can address them appropriately. Do you feel a certain pause might be too long, and would like a version with that pause shortened? Of course! Perhaps you’re unsure of something in the tone of voice, or the stress on a certain word? Don’t keep it to yourself, please! I always respond quickly to messages and am happy to answer any questions you may have.
When I get to tell your story, I want to know how to tell it best; it’s your story!
Transparency is the best long-term strategy
It’s not uncommon for me to politely decline a project when I feel I am not the right person for the job, don’t have the time needed to deliver a quality product, or have some other objection. When this happens, I’ll be completely transparent as to why I’m doing so. When I offer a price for a project, it’s based on the amount of work needed to deliver the best possible quality. Though this sometimes leads to a customer going with another voice actor, I am perfectly fine with that; I don’t want to compromise on quality just to earn a few extra bucks. I believe your story deserves the best storyteller for the job, and when that’s not me, that’s just fine!
I offer some additional services you may find interesting:
1. Translation and proofreading
I can translate scripts from English into Dutch and vice versa. I can also do extensive proofreading and suggest corrections. When I encounter something in a script that might look to be linguistically incorrect, I will always get in touch and suggest a correction if wanted as standard part of my services.
2. ACX standards
Platforms such as Amazon have specific technical requirements that audio needs to fit before they can be submitted and approved. I have extensive experience with these standards and can deliver work according to these specifications.
3. Sync to video
I can sync audio to your videos for a small extra charge, depending on the size of the project.
4. Full production from script to audio
Having worked with music and audio for many years, I can deliver a fully mixed and mastered product in whichever technical format you’d like.
5. Custom soundtrack
As an instrumental composer, I can compose and produce a custom soundtrack for your project. This can range from a simple, single instrument background piece to a full orchestral production. I’m more than happy to discuss the options with you and provide some samples of my work.
6. Remote direction
I offer a variety of options for remote direction, and am always open to this!
