Dana Whittle

Sainte-Béatrix, Quebec, CA

Highlights

My natural speaking voice is low, but I have a wide vocal range. I have frequently been told that I have a neutral, "broadcaster" voice (no strong regional hints). My tone is smooth and can easily range from silky to confident and authoritative. I articulate well and am extremely comfortable doing first-person or documentary style voices. On the character side of things, I enjoy doing teen or young adult voices and due to my broad register, feel that I am good at portraying both boys and girls in those genres.

Experience

While I am a beginning voice over artist, for 30-plus years I have been a professional musician – a successful singer-songwriter with a strong and compelling voice and broad vocal range. Since I only recently began my foray into the world of voice over, my résumé is understandably thin.

Starting at a young age, I have spent a lifetime on stage as a touring performer (I am proud to be the granddaughter of a former New York Metropolitan Opera singer). I performed in theatre productions throughout my childhood - musicals and plays, as well as youth choral groups. In addition to being an active performer, I currently create, record and produce in my own studio. As the founder and ex-president of an internationally-renowned folk music organization, I did a lot of public speaking, making countless presentations over a 10-year stint, as well as doing live translation from French to English (I live and work daily in both French and English).

I am also an educator and writer/producer of online tutorial material for audiences in the tech and music worlds. Getting serious about doing voice acting has long been something I aspired to and seems a natural next step as I gear down from a life of touring and live performance. My writing and editing skills and experience make voice acting a pure pleasure – I can finally "voice" the kind of material I have been providing others with for so many years!

An all-around artist, I am also a technical person and veteran graphic designer and web developer, so the production aspect of doing voice carries an additional appeal for me, as well and I have have already applied myself to creating audio for this entirely different set of specifications, so different from the music industry. In my many years as both an employee and then head of a creative firm, I have been involved in casting, copywriting and limited voice over for radio and television – sadly no record exists for the latter as it predates the digital era.

I believe that my years of writing and creating for a major national clientele in different industries translates into an ability to get inside the persona that each voice acting job demands, however big or small. Wearing any of my many hats – singer, writer, designer – it has always been my job to deliver "character", regardless of the medium.
