Albuquerque, New Mexico's largest city, is a sprawling metropolis of near 500,000 people on the banks of the Rio Grande River. It is sheltered by the spectacularly high cliffs of the Sandia Mountains to the east. Albuquerque lies at the junction of Interstate 25 once the heavily traveled Kamina riel between Santa Fe and Mexico City and Interstate 40. Better known as America's old Route 66 it is a uniquely diverse blend of the antique and the contemporary frontier town and cosmopolitan city and man made and natural environments flavored by both indigenous and imported cultures, cuisines and styles. Perhaps the best place to begin exploration of this intriguing city is in Old Town, just south of Interstate 40 on the west side of town. Most of the buildings in the historic plaza date back to 17 06 and Albuquerque is official, founding as a Spanish colonial villa named after the Duke of Alburquerque. The magnificent San Felipe Aidan Eerie Church dominates the square, while more than 150 shops and galleries occupy old towns, plaza and narrow back streets
