I shuffle the files on my overloaded desk and come upon a rejected page from one of my early draughts. A sheet of blank white paper lies on the carpet, fallen from a manuscript. An ant clambers onto the sheet. Niger's once or twice at the edge. It has just ascended, then turns and heads off across the white wasteland. It has a long way to go. Before finding another edge, the man watches, silently absorbed in the determined passage of the ant across the paper. At last, it reaches an edge far away from where it ascended. The man watches anxiously. He leans forward as if to flick the ant forward towards a new edge. But his hand pauses and holds back the ant advances. Still aiming straight of the approaching edge, the man waits. He cannot move. His whole being is enmeshed in the ants movement. Towards the new edge. The ant reaches the edge and stops. It cannot climb off, cannot climb over the edge. It is trapped. It has nowhere to go except toe wonder, the vastness trailing the man's apprehension from edge to edge.
