EXPLORE THE ARABIC LANGUAGE

Arabic is the official language of 22 countries and spoken by over 420 million people around the world, making it the most widely spoken of the Semitic languages. Formal Arabic, called Classical Arabic or Fus-ha, remains widely used by scholars and is taught in schools, however this version of the language is mainly written and not spoken as frequently. Modern Standard Arabic, or MSA, is very close to Classical Arabic but simpler. You’ll hear this version of Arabic on television programming, used by presenters, politicians, in news publications and in works of modern Arabic literature. Like other languages, there are many dialects of Arabic, with some being almost indiscernible to speakers across different regions. That said, when communicating in MSA, conversation and understanding between speakers of various Arabic dialects is possible.
