Sam didn't have any toys. Not like you. And I know he had no cards or castles, no dolls, racetracks or superheroes or soapy bubbles floating and popping in the air. Some would probably have enjoyed those things. He just didn't have them. What he did have was some maplewood, a few tools and six strings. He swished the strings and swung them above his head. Then he held them straight and plucked them. He was interested in their noises. But as he tried to listen closer, he heard some other sounds. He couldn't quite understand strings of her knitting clothes, strings of her tying shoes. Worst game ever to. Some, those words smelled like sour milk. What did smell good was his maplewood and as he gently warmed it, he thought he could detect the sweet syrup that used to live inside it. The wood softened, sighed and sagged. Then Sam cut it into a sort of pear shape. This is a little extract from another one called Never Tell a story. Really? Well, a bear who'd had a grizzly day was going to snooze his cares away and put his cub to bed. But cub who still wanted to play and so wanted her there to stay. Had this idea. Instead a story, please. And make it big. The dwarves, the goats and all three pigs become a dragon roaring fire. Make the witches broom zoo higher. Sail us to a treasure chest bear. Please. You always tell it best. Just then a little creature came waddling through the door. A sleepy little soman they'd never seen before. A warning to you gently. A warning to the wise when teeth are clean pajamas on and stars are in the skies. Never tell your story very well. If you want to sleep tonight, make your story just all right. Or you'll fly off with magic friends to far off lands with endless ends. Then closing pages spent and done. Once you've both had so much fun, you'll go to say good night and then you'll hear that dreadful word again and we'll do. Still sound good to me.
